Overview

An understanding of the research process and tools, different types of research, and how to interpret and critically evaluate research in its multiple forms is needed to work effectively in Public Health and related areas. The unit explores a range of research methods - quantitative, qualitative, mixed methods. It will develop your skills in how to develop research questions and design surveys to address them.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit you will be able to:

  1. Design search strategies to search scholarly literature relevant to specific research questions;
  2. Identify key elements of research methods to inform the evaluation of scholarly literature
  3. Apply survey design principles to design surveys to address specific research questions
  4. Reflect on peer feedback to improve the design of research methods

Content

The unit will cover the following:

  • What is research? Why is it important?
  • Developing a research question and literature search strategies
  • Evaluating a range of research methods including quantitative approaches (observational studies, clinical trials), qualitative approaches, mixed methods, and methods appropriate for specific settings (e.g. community-based research, including Indigenous research methodologies)
  • Designing research tools, specifically surveys using digital technologies
  • Reflecting on feedback to inform improved research approaches

Learning Approaches

In this unit, you will learn by engaging in the following:

  • lectures - delivered on-campus and offered synchronously online. Recordings are available.
  • tutorials (separate online and on-campus offerings)
  • online readings and learning materials
  • real world examples of research methods and research career options and pathways in public health
  • team learning and peer feedback
  • library online modules and support for search skills in public health

In order to maximise your learning experience in this unit, preparation in advance of tutorial sessions and active participation is expected of you.

Feedback on Learning and Assessment

You will gain peer and tutor feedback on the activities conducted in tutorials. You will also receive written feedback on your first assessment, which will prepare you for your final assessment. In your second assessment you will receive peer feedback before the final submission.

Assessment

Overview

There are two assessments in this unit:

1. Annotated Bibliography - This will connect to what you have learnt about literature search strategies, developing research questions and different research methods to build a bibliography that evaluates scholarly literature in public health.

2. Survey Design - This will develop your skills in designing surveys in response to specific research questions and provide the opportunity to reflect on your design informed by peer feedback.

Unit Grading Scheme

7- point scale

Assessment Tasks

Assessment: Annotated Bibliography

You will develop a research question related to public health and a search strategy to find evidence relevant to the research question. You will need to select three sources - one quantitative research, one qualitative research and one mixed methods. You will analyse and evaluate each source to produce an annotated bibliography. You must include your research question and search strategy in your submission.

This assignment is eligible for the 48-hour late submission period and assignment extensions.

Weight: 40
Length: 1000 words
Individual/Group: Individual
Due (indicative): Week 7
Related Unit learning outcomes: 1, 2

Assessment: Survey Design

You will take on the role of a public health professional to produce a survey to further investigate a public health issue of relevance to your organisation. The audience you design this for will depend on the research question you chose in Assessment 1.

Part A: You will develop a survey based on the research question identified in Assessment 1 to support mixed methods research. The survey will need to be created using digital tools to enable digital sharing. You will need to include a summary that provides a rationale for your survey design.

Part B: You will share your survey with peers for feedback and write a reflection on how you would improve your survey based on peer feedback.

This assignment is eligible for the 48-hour late submission period and assignment extensions.

Weight: 60
Length: 1000 words + survey
Individual/Group: Individual
Due (indicative): Week 13
Related Unit learning outcomes: 3, 4

Academic Integrity

Students are expected to engage in learning and assessment at QUT with honesty, transparency and fairness. Maintaining academic integrity means upholding these principles and demonstrating valuable professional capabilities based on ethical foundations.

Failure to maintain academic integrity can take many forms. It includes cheating in examinations, plagiarism, self-plagiarism, collusion, and submitting an assessment item completed by another person (e.g. contract cheating). It can also include providing your assessment to another entity, such as to a person or website.

You are encouraged to make use of QUT’s learning support services, resources and tools to assure the academic integrity of your assessment. This includes the use of text matching software that may be available to assist with self-assessing your academic integrity as part of the assessment submission process.

Further details of QUT’s approach to academic integrity are outlined in the Academic integrity policy and the Student Code of Conduct. Breaching QUT’s Academic integrity policy is regarded as student misconduct and can lead to the imposition of penalties ranging from a grade reduction to exclusion from QUT.
