Overview

This unit focuses on critically analysing and planning health promotion using health promotion frameworks. Applying these frameworks to design contemporary health promotion solutions is essential for those who wish to work in a health promotion or related field. This unit extends the fundamental health promotion knowledge learnt in PUB530, Health Education and Behaviour Change to enable the translation of knowledge into practice. PUB406 provides essential learning for PUB875 Professional Practice.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit you will be able to:

  1. Appraise how social ecological frameworks are being applied in health promotion practice.
  2. Argue for evidence-based solutions for specific health problems to a professional audience.
  3. Design plans to implement innovative solutions to health promotion problems.
  4. Negotiate with colleagues to agree on action plans using digital collaboration tools.

Content

The unit covers the following:

  • planning and evaluation for health promotion,
  • identifying priorities and determinants for health promotion,
  • entrepreneurial approaches and strategies for improving health (social marketing, advocacy and lobbying, policy, legislative and, organisational change, communication using diverse technologies, settings approaches, and health promotion partnerships)
  • future directions in health promotion practice and careers.

Learning Approaches

In this unit, you will learn by engaging in the following:

  • online modules (including pre-recorded lecture videos)
  • online readings and learning materials
  • workshops (separate online and on-campus offerings)
  • group discussions during on-campus and online workshops
  • formative assessment opportunity prior to Assessment 2

To prepare for workshops you will be expected to have engaged with the relevant videos and readings prior. The class maximises shared learning, provides opportunities for group problem-solving, and builds upon the experiences that students bring to the unit.

Feedback on Learning and Assessment

You will receive feedback through:

  • Teaching staff and other students during problem-based learning exercises undertaken during workshops
  • Teaching staff and peer feedback on formative assessment prior to Assessment 2. You will have the opportunity to present a preliminary proposal (formative assessment) to your peers for critique and feedback which can inform your final submission.
  • Teaching staff feedback on marking criteria sheets provided for the two summative assessments

Assessment

Overview

There are two assessments in this unit:

1. Analysis of Practice - This draws on your understanding of health promotion frameworks to analyse current practice.

2. Health Promotion Action Plan - This will further develop your skills in following planning models and frameworks to design health promotion strategies. You will use persuasive communication techniques to pitch for support for the implementation of health promotion strategies. Being able to work in a team and pitch for funding and support will be critical to your career in a health field.

Academic Integrity

Students are expected to engage in learning and assessment at QUT with honesty, transparency and fairness. Maintaining academic integrity means upholding these principles and demonstrating valuable professional capabilities based on ethical foundations.

Failure to maintain academic integrity can take many forms. It includes cheating in examinations, plagiarism, self-plagiarism, collusion, and submitting an assessment item completed by another person (e.g. contract cheating). It can also include providing your assessment to another entity, such as to a person or website.

You are encouraged to make use of QUT’s learning support services, resources and tools to assure the academic integrity of your assessment. This includes the use of text matching software that may be available to assist with self-assessing your academic integrity as part of the assessment submission process.

Further details of QUT’s approach to academic integrity are outlined in the Academic integrity policy and the Student Code of Conduct. Breaching QUT’s Academic integrity policy is regarded as student misconduct and can lead to the imposition of penalties ranging from a grade reduction to exclusion from QUT.
