Overview
The complexity of the chemical systems studied in a research program and the sophistication of the instrumentation used demand that deeper theoretical understanding than that acquired in an undergraduate program. The aims of this unit are to extend and deepen the theoretical and practical background required for undertaking a research program and to provide the candidate with the appropriate theoretical and practical background, at an advanced level, necessary for the completion of a research program.

Content
Synthetic methods and strategies, detailed study of selected reactions.
Topics to be covered will include: automated methods of chemical analysis, flow-based chemical analysis techniques, such as continuous flow analysis, stopped flow analysis, flow injection analysis and discontinuous flow analysis, together with appropriate detector technology.
An understanding of the fundamental fragmentation processes and the interpretation of the spectra of simple organic compounds.
Acquisition of time-domain NMR spectra by pulsed RF procedures including: the advantages of pulsed procedures, the simple vector model to represent the behaviour of bulk magnetisation, the rotating frame of reference, free induction decay and Fourier transformation, relaxation, the effects of chemical shift and coupling on the evolution of the magnetisation after pulses and delays.
Theory, instrumentation and application of Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and Raman spectroscopy. Sampling techniques including transmittance, attenuated total reflectance, photoacoustic spectroscopy, microspectroscopy and the use of optical fibres.
Learning Approaches
A series of formal lectures and/or a reading program combined with relevant laboratory exercises.
