Overview
The focus of this unit is the application of specialist knowledge and evidence in varied paediatric settings to support you to become an emerging leader. Through the examination of issues that impact on caring for children and families, you will apply specialist knowledge to guide your clinical reasoning and decision-making in the health-related concerns of children and families. You will explore various models and potential threats to paediatric and adolescent care, and consider approaches to optimising child and family outcomes.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this unit you will be able to:
- Apply specialist knowledge and skills to nursing paediatrics, adolescents and families.
- Examine clinical scenarios and reflect on care provision.
- Employ leadership by drawing on evidence-based recommendations and peer feedback to evaluate a clinical case.
- Navigate care effectively and collaboratively within interprofessional and teams and systems in paediatric and adolescent care settings.
Content
Modules will focus on specialist nursing care of infants, children, adolescents and families and aims to develop your specialist nursing knowledge in this field by exploring care navigation and planning for children and young people.
This unit will cover the following topics:
- various models of care
- complex decision making and care planning
- external threats to paediatric and adolescent care
- interprofessional and system partnerships; and
- reflective practice in nursing leadership.

In this unit, you will learn through engaging in the following:
- Workshops (online) to support knowledge development and academic literacy skills
- Online self-directed learning
- Peer review/feedback
- Individual research and readings; and
- Collaborative activities.
In undertaking this unit you will be working in a clinical practice setting and drawing on this experience.

Overview
The assessment for this unit is comprised of two summative items.
This unit will use online web based text matching software that assists students to develop the academic skills required to correctly use and cite reference material as well as check citations to determine and avoid possible instances of plagiarism.

Assessment: Case Report of a Complex Case
This assessment requires you to identify and explore a complex paediatric/adolescent case provided to you. You will be required to develop a resilience plan in relation to models of care, complex decision making and threats to paediatric/adolescent care through a report to determine how improvements could be made to the paediatric/adolescent and family's care.

Assessment: Critical Reflection of a Case Conference
Drawing on your modules and webinars, in this assessment you will be required to present a written reflection of your personal and professional learnings and growth. You will be required to link your reflections to key policies and evidence related to the delivery of neuro-informed practice and child and family centred care.
This is an assignment for the purposes of an extension.
