Overview

This unit will develop your theoretical knowledge and clinical skills to apply evidence-based practice in acute healthcare contexts. Individuals in acute care environments experience a wide range of complex health care problems. Drawing on the National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) Standards, you will examine patient care in your acute care setting taking into consideration cultural safety for diverse populations including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. You will apply specialist knowledge and evidence to guide your clinical reasoning and decision-making to optimise patient outcomes.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit you will be able to:

  1. Apply specialist knowledge and skills to make evidence-based decisions to inform practice in acute care settings.
  2. Examine the application of National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) Standards to patient care within your workplace.
  3. Engage varied communication modes to effectively articulate specialist nursing knowledge.

  • Care bundles
  • Models of care
  • National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) Standards; and
  • Patient deterioration.

Assessment: Quality and Safety Presentation

Identify a current or past quality and safety improvement initiative in your workplace, such as a project that aligns with one of the National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) Standards. Drawing on the literature, critically analyse the improvement strategies and tools.

This is an assignment for the purposes of an extension.

Assessment: Case Study Reflection

Engage in an online action learning set throughout the semester focused on improving the effectiveness of acute care frontline teams. Reflect on the development of facilitation skills needed to develop and demonstrate personal effectiveness, foster the effectiveness of others, and transform practice. 

This is an assignment for the purposes of an extension.
