Overview

Registered nurses working in intensive care require specialised knowledge and skills to plan, provide and evaluate safe evidence-based nursing care. Working in a complex and dynamic healthcare environment, the specialist intensive care nurse is required to have the ability to respond, adapt, implement, evaluate and communicate decisions based on the scope and context of practice for a range of critically ill individuals and their families across the lifespan. Contemporary healthcare service delivery in the intensive care setting is constantly changing. You will be encouraged to critique and employ innovative technologies and therapies. 

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit you will be able to:

  1. Apply advanced specialist, theoretical and technical knowledge of intensive care nursing to improve and transform person-centred and family care.
  2. Critically analyse and evaluate complex health related situations during critical illness in the intensive care setting to identify problems and develop evidence-based solutions.
  3. Collaborate and communicate to assess, plan, deliver, and evaluate evidence-based outcomes in a range of clinical encounters in the specialty of intensive care nursing.
  4. Employ leadership by drawing on evidence-based recommendations and peer feedback to evaluate a clinical case.

Content

This unit will cover the following topics:

  • Cardiac care and cardiothoracic
  • Advanced haemodynamic monitoring
  • Continuous renal replacement therapy
  • Intra aortic balloon pumps
  • ECMO
  • Ventricular assist devices
  • Obstetric emergencies
  • Haematology/oncological emergencies; and
  • Gastrointestinal Emergencies

Assessment

Overview

The assessment for this unit is comprised of 3 summative items.
This unit will use online web-based text-matching software that assists students to develop the academic skills required to correctly use and cite reference material as well as check citations to determine and avoid possible instances of plagiarism.

Assessment Tasks

Assessment: Case Analysis

You will undertake a critique of your clinical decisions based on a presented deteriorating patient scenario. You will present a structured case analysis using a recognised framework to complete this activity.  

 

This assignment is eligible for the 48-hour late submission period and assignment extension.

Assessment: Case presentation

You will present a case study and critique the care provided to the patient in line with the current best available evidence. This presentation will be undertaken within a clinical environment to an audience of your peers. You will submit a PowerPoint presentation that contains references to your work.

Length: 10 minute presentation with written supporting evidence.

Assessment: Exam

You will be required to complete a written examination which will include multichoice questions, clinical case/s and short answer items in which you will apply critical analysis skills and the integration of specialised theoretical knowledge to a range of clinical situations.
