Overview

This unit builds on your knowledge and skills in the specialist area of gastroenterology to enhance the delivery of evidence-based nursing care for patients in a variety of settings. There is an emphasis on developing your problem solving and analytical skills to make effective clinical decisions related to the upper and lower gastrointestinal tract, liver, and pancreas. Common diagnostic investigations and, contemporary issues that impact specialist nursing practice for the diverse patient populations with gastrointestinal disease, will also be explored.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit you will be able to:

  1. Apply specialist knowledge of gastroenterology nursing to deliver care in a variety of practice settings.
  2. Critically analyse patient situations in gastroenterology contexts to identify, prioritise and evaluate evidence-based nursing care solutions.
  3. Apply professional communication skills to transfer complex information in the provision of specialist nursing practice in gastroenterology.
  4. Reflect on capacity to articulate acquired knowledge and skills as an emerging leader in a specialty nursing field.

Content

A broad range of clinical issues and concepts underpinning practice will include:

  • contemporary management and evaluation of patients with upper and lower gastrointestinal disorders, liver and pancreatic disorders
  • pathophysiology, diagnostic procedures
  • psychosocial underpinnings of person-centred care; and
  • the burden of gastrointestinal disease in diverse populations including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

Assessment

Overview

There are three summative assessments to be completed throughout the semester.
This unit will use online web based text matching software that assists students to develop the academic skills required to correctly use and cite reference material as well as check citations to determine and avoid possible instances of plagiarism.

Assessment: Presentation

Presentation

Using your specialist knowledge of gastroenterology, you will create and present an educational video recording for a nursing audience. The video should be designed as an educational resource for new graduate RNs joining your workplace. Select a clinical procedure or competency that you are familiar with. Explain the nursing role and responsibilities and relevant policy/procedure. Outline required skills with rationales based on current evidence-based recommendations or guidelines, and your own experience. Highlight important points to ensure the delivery of safe and effective nursing care that results in optimal patient outcomes.

The recording will be uploaded and viewed by peers who will provide you with feedback. You will, in turn review other students' recordings and provide feedback to them. Feedback will be anonymous.

Assessment: Case Study

Case Study

This assessment requires you to apply specialist theoretical knowledge and problem-solving to analyse a clinical scenario, examine the priority concerns for a patient experiencing a GI diagnosis. Using evidence-based recommendations and guidelines, you will develop and evaluate a nursing care plan.
