Overview
The digital revolution has changed business practices and enabled access to a range of data, which can support business decisions, help businesses better understand their customers and improve performance. The value of data can only be realised when it is translated into meaningful information, which provides a basis for informed decision-making. In this unit you will extend your foundational understanding of business intelligence to learn how to extract value from complex datasets. Through exposure to theoretical frameworks and real world application, you will gain skills to address contemporary issues facing organisations as they leverage data for decision-making, evaluate ethical considerations, explore artificial intelligence (Al) possibilities, and craft data-driven business strategies based on industry accepted data analytic processes. You will learn how to incorporate evidence-driven decision-making at all levels of the organisation.

Learning Approaches
This unit is delivered in a blended format to maximise flexibility for students. Weekly lectures are presented and recorded to provide a background, introduction and overview to the main topics and perspectives being considered each week. Additionally, readings, cases, additional videos and associated exercises will be made available online. Completing the assigned exercises prior to class is recommended for maximising learning from the unit.
Feedback on Learning and Assessment
Students will receive feedback in various forms throughout the semester which may include:
- Informal: worked examples, such as verbal feedback in class, personal consultation
- Formal: in writing, such as checklists (e.g. criteria sheets), written commentary
- Direct: to individual students, either in written form or in consultation
- Indirect: to the whole class

Assessment: Emerging Topics Discussion Paper
You will select and research contemporary data driven business challenges as the organisation seeks to leverage large-scale datasets or deploy emerging technologies. Based on your research, you will prepare a discussion paper where you will critically analyse your chosen contemporary data driven business challenges and explain how business intelligence and information systems can be used to address these challenges.

Assessment: White paper
The executive leaders of your organisation have approached you seeking your expertise about utilising big data to drive strategic decision-making. You will prepare a white paper to discuss the potential and challenges of a data-driven management approach. As part of the white paper, you will also present recommendations to guide the effective implementation of a data-driven management approach. Your white paper should address the foundations of a data-driven approach, technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) and potential ethical issues.
