Overview

The unit focuses on developing the skills necessary to define and design a proposal to address a real-world business issue. Adopting a systematic approach to defining and designing a business project, the unit offers students the opportunity to develop the research in practice skills necessary to address a real-world business issue.  Students will learn how to convert business issues into an actionable project proposal and develop and apply research informed skills to communicate actionable socially responsible solutions.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit you will be able to:

  1. Critically evaluate research designs for a Management or HRM business issue [KS 1.1, HO 2.2]
  2. Convert business issues into researchable questions using theoretical and conceptual frameworks from Management or HRM underpinned by principles of social responsibility [HO 2.2, SE 5.2]
  3. Identify, critically assess and justify suitable primary and secondary data, knowledge sources and research methods relevant to the project addressing a real-world business problem underpinned by principles of social responsibility [HO 2.2, SE 5.2]
  4. Critically assess the ethical issues raised by the business project design [SE 5.1]

Learning Approaches

In this unit, you will learn by engaging in lectures and workshops. A range of activities are provided to stimulate discussions, exchange ideas and co-create content. The unit requires students to be self-motivated, pre-prepared and active participants, supportive of peer-to-peer learning.

Feedback on Learning and Assessment

Students will receive feedback in various forms throughout the semester which may include:

  • Informal: worked examples, such as verbal feedback in class, personal consultation
  • Formal: in writing, such as checklists (e.g. criteria sheets), written commentary
  • Direct: to individual students, either in written form or in consultation
  • Indirect: to the whole class

Assessment: Business Research Proposal

Produce a business research proposal that provides an outline of your approach to a Management or HRM issue that requires investigation. This includes a working title, research question, literature review, a proposed research design and the practical contributions the research will make. Ethical considerations of your research proposal must also be considered.

Assessment: Business Research Plan

Develop a business research plan which demonstrates the principles of social responsibility to address an identified business issue from a Management or HRM perspective. The project plan requires you to construct research questions grounded in a theoretical and conceptual framework, identify sources and methods of data collection and analysis, and identify ethical issues around data collection.
