Overview

Formally and informally, people live and work in organisations. Only through an understanding of the relevant individual, group and organisation dynamics will graduates be able to function effectively as leaders and managers. Moreover, when leading through change, it is critical that leaders understand the factors that influence the thoughts, feelings, motivations and actions of themselves and others in the workplace. In this unit students will explore tools necessary to build capabilities to effectively manage change. Students will engage in topics related to understanding self and others, organisational contexts and cultural perspectives, and leading change ethically through disruption. Learning in this unit will assist students in developing self-reflective managerial and leadership competencies needed to optimise individual, group and organisation dynamics, including effectively dealing with competing priorities in organisations.

 

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit you will be able to:

  1. Interpret and explain the dynamics of human behaviour in changing organisational settings and their impact upon organisational effectiveness using a range of research and technologies. [KS 1.1, 1.2]
  2. Critically analyse major theories and models of organisational behaviour in relation to individual, organisational, and cultural contexts with a view to applying them to developing ethical leadership of change in organisational settings. [KS 1.1, HO 2.1, SE 5.1]
  3. Create and present proficient and specialised reports, both written and oral, using a range of presentation mediums and styles to meet the needs of a professional audience. [PC 3.1, 3.2]
  4. Work with members of a team to evaluate and apply knowledge of ethical behaviour in analysing and addressing detailed organisational issue(s) identified by the team, and present this work to peers. [TS 4.2, SE 5.1]

Content

The unit will cover topics related to people's behaviour at work, such as Understanding self and others, organisational contexts and cultural perspectives, Leading change ethically through disruption. This will help students to develop paradoxical thinking when dealing with competing priorities.

Learning Approaches

The unit seeks to introduce and build on basic concepts and theories of organisational behaviour, and relate these to practice and experience. The text book provides the basis of the concepts to be covered. Discussion groups will be used to consolidate and extend the basic material. Workshops and readings provide for advanced analysis and practical focus. Each session will focus on the pragmatic application of theories and models in work contexts, with learning activities engaging students via a range of participative activities, including in discussion-based learning, case studies, and interactive reviews of course content.

The QUT Business School seeks to create postgraduate learning environments that help participants better manage family-work-study conflicts. In this unit flexible delivery options are supported by educational technologies to allow you to participate in class remotely, and to connect you with others in the unit and with unit content.

This unit uses text authentication tools that assist students to develop the academic skills required to correctly use and cite reference material as well as to check citations and determine possible instances of plagiarism. You will be expected to submit draft and/or final versions of one or more assignments using these text authentication tools. Your Unit Coordinator will provide detailed information on how the software will be used in this unit. 

Feedback on Learning and Assessment

Students will receive feedback in various forms throughout the semester which may include:

  • Informal: worked examples, such as verbal feedback in class, personal consultation
  • Formal: in writing, such as checklists (e.g. criteria sheets), written commentary
  • Direct: to individual students, either in written form or in consultation

Assessment

Overview

The assessment in this unit aims to support your achievement of the learning objectives for both Discipline Knowledge and Other Graduate Capabilities. Assessment has been designed in order to allow you to:

  • Receive feedback on your learning as you progress toward the development of knowledge, understanding, skills and attitudes (formative assessment);
  • and Demonstrate your learning in order to achieve a final grade (summative assessment).

Students may be required to attend campus or an assessment centre for the purposes of assessment, regardless of the attendance mode for the unit.

Assessment: Management Report

Written individual report for your management team on how they can respond to an organisational scenario and recommend strategies supported by relevant literature and paying attention to ethical considerations

This assignment is eligible for the 48-hour late submission period and assignment extensions.

Assessment: Group Presentation (Video) and Reflective VLog

This assessment has both a group (50%) and individual part (10%).

Group: As part of a presentation team, you will create a group video presentation using technology that provides practical information and an ethical leadership response to one of the organisational scenarios that has been undertaken in Assessment 1. The group presentation will be submitted as a video recording in week 12 and will be shown in the class in Week 13 at the unit's 'OB Film Festival'. This assessment is not eligible for the 48-hour late submission period and assignment extensions.

Individual: To enhance learning and focus on group team effectiveness, students are required (individually) to provide a video recording of a detailed reflective account of their experiences in their respective group via a 3 min vlog (video log) post to evaluate the effectiveness of their group throughout the semester. The individual vlog is submitted as a video recording in week 13 and is eligible for the 48-hour late submission period and assignment extensions.
