Overview
This work-integrated-learning unit provides students with a real-world opportunity to work with industry partners to apply their legal knowledge especially in the context of a privacy/surveillance/technology related issue. The students will extend their learning related to one or more of the Minor units to examine a technology law-related issue identified by the industry partner. The students will benefit from industry input by situating their academic learning in a real-world context that considers the complexities of developing legal and regulatory solutions based on risk assessments. Doing so will provide the students with insight into the application of privacy law based on a real-world scenario.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this unit you will be able to:
- Identify relevant law/technology issues applicable in legal practice and data governance (CLOs 1.1, 1.3, 1.5, 3.1)
- Apply problem solving and critical thinking skills to develop practical legal and regulatory solutions to data governance issues (CLOs 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, 3.2, 3.3, 5.1)
- Effectively communicate in written, oral, and digital formats (CLOs 4.1, 4.2, 4.3)
- Evaluate and reflect on your application of legal content and skills learned in other Minor units (CLOs 1.1, 2.3, 5.2)
Content
This unit consolidates and builds on knowledge and skills that you have developed in other Minor of Law, Innovation and Technology units. The unit requires you to participate in a WIL experience to produce a report for an industry partner. Content includes materials and learning experiences:
- The intersection of law and technology in practice
- The application of data privacy and/or cybersecurity law
- Data governance requirements to be applied in practice based on risk assessment.

This unit adopts a blended learning approach to facilitate project-based learning in an authentic work context.

Assessment: Industry Partner Brief
You will provide a memo to the industry partner that identifies and summarises the key legal and regulatory issues to be addressed.

This assignment is eligible for the 48-hour late submission period and assignment extensions.
Assessment: Industry Partner Presentation
You will complete a short presentation that outlines the key points of your research. This task provides you with an opportunity to present your research to key stakeholders.

The late submission period does not apply, and no assignment extensions are available.
Assessment: Industry Partner Report
You will articulate a proposed solution including a summary of the legal and regulatory problems, a recommended resolution, and an implementation strategy based on a risk assessment.

Academic Integrity
