Overview

This unit provides a unique learning opportunity to complete a sustained body of creative work in a genre or form of your choice and identify market and publication strategies for your work. Building on the project commenced in KWB306 Creative Writing Project 1, it offers you the opportunity to continue work on an extended piece of creative writing with the assistance of critiques and peer feedback. The unit aids you to identify markets for creative practice, develop skills and strategies to submit work to publishers for professional consideration, and identify and create pathways for publication.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit you will be able to:

  1. Identify professional markets for your creative practice and strategically target those markets.
  2. Critically reflect on your writing practice and articulate the intentions you have for your work.
  3. Synthesise knowledge and skills about contemporary writing debates and practices.
  4. Compose a sustained creative work that meets real world publishing requirements.

Content

This unit includes content that will facilitate analysis of suitable markets and pathways for the publication of creative writing including awards and other opportunities; development of a professional writing plan suitable to commence a career after graduation; and developing an understanding of the literary landscape in Australia and strategically positioning creative work within that landscape.

Learning Approaches

This unit will be taught through an interdependent mixture of:

  • lectures
  • tutorials
  • peer writing activities
  • individual student-directed learning.

You will be expected to display a significant ability for self-directed research and learning, as well as collaborative discussions with peers.

Assessment: Essay - Publishing Proposal

Complete a project proposal suitable to be submitted to a publisher.

This is an assignment for the purposes of an extension.

Assessment: Portfolio - Creative Work

Present a folio of creative prose (or other form equivalent) item of creative writing - fiction, creative non-fiction, poetry, script.
