Overview

This unit is based on immersive learning and will provide opportunities for you to learn about nationally or internationally recognised creative industries practices and organisations and to interact with creative industries professionals beyond Brisbane. It is designed for those who have completed at least one year of full-time study and are ready to expand their horizons by gaining experience of national or international creative industries practices, organisations, and precincts. In the context of a study tour, the unit enables you to identify methods of developing, producing, distributing and marketing culture and creativity in a national and international context. It also refines your knowledge of contemporary creative industries to enhance your professional capacities and potential for employment in creative economies.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit you will be able to:

  1. Work collaboratively to research, analyse, and compile cohesive information (e.g. creative milieu, aesthetic, social, cultural and creative economy factors) about one or more creative cities prior to arrival.
  2. Communicate the findings of research in effective visual and oral forms to your peers.
  3. Identify and engage with professional practices within one or more creative industries specific to your tour.
  4. Produce a reflective journal or blog site that describes, reflects upon, and analyses your experiences in the creative city or cities you visited during the tour.

Content

This unit addresses content such as:
  • Understanding one or more major creative industries precincts outside of Brisbane
  • The issues that pertain to prominent national or international cities and their creative industries practices and culture
  • Interaction with creative industries professionals, organisations and practices through site-based learning experiences.

Learning Approaches

The teaching schedule will involve seminars and presentations delivered at QUT followed by national or international site-based teaching. Seminars and presentations will provide an orientation to and understanding of the locations/sites to be visited and will provide a forum in which to evaluate your progress via assessment. Once on site, you will be guided through various cultural precincts, where there will be an emphasis on immersive learning. Additionally, there will be discussion sessions during the period of travel to help you think through and understand the significance of the sites and organisations you have visited.

Feedback on Learning and Assessment

FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT
The use of feedback and on-going discussions with QUT staff and leading practitioners on location is a crucial element of this unit. Additionally, you will receive formative feedback on your progress in this unit during seminars, presentations and discussions throughout the semester.

Assessment

Overview

Working in small groups you are required to research and verbally present an aspect of the creative industries in the location(s) that you will be visiting, and present proposed engagement strategies to ensure you make the most of your immersive cultural experience. It is expected that the presentation will include visual and/or audio content. This presentation assessment piece will measure Unit Learning Outcomes (ULO) 1 and 2.

Academic Integrity

Students are expected to engage in learning and assessment at QUT with honesty, transparency and fairness. Maintaining academic integrity means upholding these principles and demonstrating valuable professional capabilities based on ethical foundations.

Failure to maintain academic integrity can take many forms. It includes cheating in examinations, plagiarism, self-plagiarism, collusion, and submitting an assessment item completed by another person (e.g. contract cheating). It can also include providing your assessment to another entity, such as to a person or website.

You are encouraged to make use of QUT’s learning support services, resources and tools to assure the academic integrity of your assessment. This includes the use of text matching software that may be available to assist with self-assessing your academic integrity as part of the assessment submission process.

Further details of QUT’s approach to academic integrity are outlined in the Academic integrity policy and the Student Code of Conduct. Breaching QUT’s Academic integrity policy is regarded as student misconduct and can lead to the imposition of penalties ranging from a grade reduction to exclusion from QUT.
