Overview

This capstone Work Integrated Learning (WIL) unit will provide students with the opportunity to work on a "practice problem" identified by an industry partner. Students will analyse a real world problem and make recommendations to the industry partner to build their knowledge of professional practice. Students will have opportunities to interact with representatives of the justice professions to build their professional networks, career aspirations and preparedness for the workforce. The unit is designed to assist students to transition from student to justice professional translating what they have learned during their other units into a professional context. Industry partners will be involved in the design and evaluation of student assessment.   

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit you will be able to:

  1. Identify and analyse issues relating to policy, governance, criminology and/or policing and develop recommendations in response to real world problems (Relates to CLO1, CLO2 & CLO3)
  2. Critically reflect on feedback, experience and professional practice in relation to real world learning experiences (Relates to CLO5)
  3. Use contemporary research methods to support your positions with appropriate theory and evidence (Relates to CLO3)
  4. Develop knowledge and expectations of professional practice and navigate career opportunities, identify opportunities for career self-management and define career goals (Relates to CLO5)

Content

This capstone Work Integrated Learning (WIL) unit will provide students with the opportunity to work on a "practice problem" identified by an industry partner. Students will analyse a real world problem and make recommendations to the industry partner to build their knowledge of professional practice. Students will have opportunities to interact with representatives of the justice professions to build their professional networks, career aspirations and preparedness for the workforce. The unit is designed to assist students to transition from student to justice professional translating what they have learned during their other units into a professional context. Industry partners will be involved in the design and evaluation of student assessment.   

Learning Approaches

This unit will be offered to both internal and external students.

The weekly online workshops will include, inter alia, class discussions, applied theoretical skills, guidance and support with assessment items, interaction with industry or community partners, and workforce preparedness activities. In addition, students are expected to employ independent learning skills throughout the unit. Each assessment item will provide students with an opportunity to develop knowledge and key skills that will be required for pursuing professional practice.

Feedback on Learning and Assessment

Students will receive feedback in various forms throughout the semester, which may include:

  • informal: worked examples, such as verbal feedback in class, personal consultation
  • formal: in writing, eg criteria sheets, written commentary
  • direct: to individual students, either in written form or in consultation
  • indirect: to the whole class

Assessment

Overview

There are two distinct forms of assessment used in this unit - formative and summative. Formative assessment provides students with either written or verbal feedback for a piece of assessment, and summative assessment provides students with a mark that will contribute to their final grade in the unit.

Assessment: Reflection

In this task you are required to write a series of reflections on topics presented in the unit.

Assessment: Workplace report

You will be required to compile a workplace report on the problem you have chosen and make recommendations to your industry partner about how to address the problem.
