Overview

In this unit you will draw on your knowledge and skills learnt in prior IT core units to learn how to problem solve with data for the purposes of extracting business insight. Through the practical sessions you will explore the relationship between common business concerns and the data and analytics that can be used to address them, developing the skills to use a range of analytics techniques with a variety of data. You will also have the opportunity to learn how to present analytics in a meaningful way for business use. Interactive sessions will support you in increasing your understanding of different kinds of data, their importance to business, and why certain analytical and visualisation techniques can be used.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit you will be able to:

Content

Unit content will be focused on improving your understanding of the relationship between data analytics and business insight. This includes an examination of primary concerns of businesses and how data analytics may be used to address them. It will expose you to the diversity of data relevant to business, expanding on your prior learning in IFB105 and developing your understanding of contemporary approaches to data modelling. The content is also designed to build on your existing programming knowledge acquired in IFB104 through applying a variety of analysis and visualisation techniques to extract business insight from data.

Content will also enable you to explore some of the human factors involved in data analytics for business such as trust, privacy, transparency and ethical use of data.

Learning Approaches

This unit is available for you to study in either on-campus or online mode. Learning in this unit includes weekly pre-recorded lectures, online activities, tutorials, studio sessions and a unit communications channel, designed to facilitate communication with your peers and teaching staff outside of scheduled classes. You can expect to spend 10 - 15 hours per week involved in preparing for and attending all scheduled tutorials, studios, completing assessment tasks, and undertaking your own independent study to consolidate your learning.

This unit takes a contextualised practice approach to data analytics where practical activities are undertaken within the context of a typical business concern. Conceptual material on how data analytics can address business concerns is presented in parallel to the practical application of relevant techniques through studio sessions.

The unit is cross-disciplinary in nature encompassing both learning experiences that are relevant to both IT and Business. It repeatedly employs a core learning process comprising (1) Business Concern, (2) Data selection and wrangling, (3) Data analysis, (4) Visualisation, and (5) Business Insight. Multiple iterations of the process address different concerns, differing types of data, different analysis techniques and different visualisations. Business concerns will be drawn from contemporary industry-based scenarios.

The online learning component of this unit will include video presentations of key concepts with self-directed activities designed to develop understanding of these concepts. Real time tutorials and studio sessions will be delivered focused on guided practical sessions for the development of technical capability. Online learning will also be reinforced with face-to-face discussions in the studio sessions.

All practical tasks utilise digital technologies that enable learning anywhere and anytime with access to external open learning resources. The unit will provide opportunities for formative feedback associated with all key learning activities. Activities will be designed to support formative engagement with both peers and teaching team.

Feedback on Learning and Assessment

Feedback in this unit will be provided in a number of ways:

  • Real time sessions will include opportunities for discussion and receiving immediate feedback on ideas related to the conceptual content
  • Practical sessions will provide opportunities for the teaching team to view your work and provide direct feedback on it
  • Ongoing feedback will be provided to the cohort throughout the semester on general progress of the cohort, or addressing specific issues that arise during the unit
  • Assignment 1 (Data Analytics Notebook) will provide opportunities for formative feedback prior to the submission date so that you may improve the quality of your work prior to it being graded.
  • Assignment 2 (Business Insight Report) will involve a process of peer feedback
  • Assignment 3 (Reflective Journal) will include a formative feedback component early in the semester.
  • Detailed criteria sheets with any relevant comments will be provided as part of the marking of both assignments

The assessment for this unit is predominantly practical and designed to follow the topics presented throughout the semester starting with the application of data analytics techniques and culminating in a report suitable for senior managers in a business. This report is designed to be suitable for inclusion in a professional portfolio.

Data Analytics Notebook

Given a scenario based on a local business problem, address the key business concern/s through the selection of suitable data, the application of appropriate analysis techniques, and the use of effective visualisations. Document your thinking and defend your final decisions in a manner that would be acceptable to a business data analytics manager.

Assessment: Report

Business Insight Report

Given a scenario related to a local or international business, use appropriate data analytics to extract useful business insight/s, and prepare a report suitable for senior management. Ensure that the report presents the business insight/s with justification drawn from the data analytics and relevant to the business context. The report will be suitable for inclusion in a professional portfolio.

Assessment: Reflective Journal

The reflective journal will comprise two parts: Part A will be a reflection on foundational knowledge and/or skills and will receive formative feedback early in the semester. Part B will be a reflection on the challenges encountered when applying foundational skills within a given data analytics business context. The reflection should incorporate how data analytics tasks would be approached in a business context.
