Overview

The development of critical appraisal skills is essential for students undertaking postgraduate study. This unit provides an opportunity to investigate a relevant topic in your area of study or clinical practice. In the process of identifying, gathering and analysing up-to-date relevant literature and/or undertaking associated research activities through a literature based review, you will strengthen skills in the synthesis of information and report writing relevant to your field or discipline.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit you will be able to:

  1. Critically appraise current literature in your area of study or clinical practice.
  2. Iteratively reflect upon feedback to inform the development and delivery of a professional report.
  3. Critically analyse and synthesise information to produce a logical and coherent argument on a professionally oriented inquiry.
  4. Apply academic writing skills to produce an evidence-based report about a professionally oriented inquiry.
  5. Apply verbal communication skills to present your research.

Content

The content covered will vary according to your interests, your area of study/clinical practice, and expertise of supervisors. You are expected to work independently on the project during the 13 week semester for approximately 12 hours per week, or equivalent. This includes scheduled drop-in sessions with a supervisor who will provide academic support and monitor progress.

Learning Approaches

Prior to enrolling in this unit, students MUST contact the appropriate Unit Coordinator to discuss supervision and expectations of enrolment.

Independent Study requires time management and self-discipline. The research area selected is to be discussed with supervising staff. This partnership is critical. Students should meet regularly with their supervisor and are advised when necessary to attend the Advanced Information Retrieval Skills workshop organised through the library.

Regular meetings (or communication) with your supervisor are to be used to critically discuss your approaches to your topic and to have your questions answered.

Feedback on Learning and Assessment

Ongoing formative assessment will be provided via regular meetings (or communication) with your supervisor to outline progress and ensure objectives are met.

Assessment

Overview

The ability to apply advanced knowledge and skills with a high level of autonomy is a hallmark of postgraduate education at the Masters level. By undertaking a scholarly piece of work, this unit gives you the opportunity to consolidate, extend and apply the skills that you have gained to date in an area that is relevant to your field of study and professional practice, by demonstrating creativity and initiative to analyse, synthesise and develop knowledge.

Assessment task 1 asks you to present your independent study proposal, building on the work you have completed in HLN707, which is a prerequisite to this unit. In a synchronous environment, you will verbally present your planned research project to a group of academics and peers and respond to questions presented by the audience.

For Assessment task 2, you will complete a scholarly project that demonstrates a critical understanding of a problem/issue/question, critically interprets findings, draws conclusions and, as appropriate, makes recommendations for future work in the area. On commencing this unit, you will liaise with the teaching staff to define the scope, expectations, learning activities and time frame for your project. You will complete a 5000-word structured review. The structured review is a focused piece of scholarly writing that culminates learning and development in Master of Public Health.

As a capstone type unit, the design of assessment tasks as proposed here consolidates critical learning and topic areas completed in PU86 and PU87 and enables students to demonstrate such learning throughout the course.

Academic Integrity

Academic integrity is a commitment to undertaking academic work and assessment in a manner that is ethical, fair, honest, respectful and accountable.

The Academic Integrity Policy sets out the range of conduct that can be a failure to maintain the standards of academic integrity. This includes, cheating in exams, plagiarism, self-plagiarism, collusion and contract cheating. It also includes providing fraudulent or altered documentation in support of an academic concession application, for example an assignment extension or a deferred exam.

You are encouraged to make use of QUT’s learning support services, resources and tools to assure the academic integrity of your assessment. This includes the use of text matching software that may be available to assist with self-assessing your academic integrity as part of the assessment submission process.

Breaching QUT’s Academic Integrity Policy or engaging in conduct that may defeat or compromise the purpose of assessment can lead to a finding of student misconduct (Code of Conduct – Student) and result in the imposition of penalties under the Management of Student Misconduct Policy, ranging from a grade reduction to exclusion from QUT.
