Overview
This capstone research project is the culmination of your Honours degree in your chosen discipline area. It scaffolds yoursynthesis of knowledge and skills to answer a research question at an advanced level and develop independently as aresearcher and evidence-based practitioner.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this unit you will be able to:
- Apply advanced knowledge of research design, methodologies and principles to a discipline specific practice question;
- Critically appraise relevant literature and study designs independently;
- Collect, analyse, and evaluate research data and formulate justified conclusions;
- Apply clear, coherent verbal and written communication skills to present your project to peers and professionals;
Content
The content of your research project will be determined mostly by your research question. This unit builds on the skills developed in HLH401 (Advanced Research Methods), where you have completed a critical appraisal of evidence and developed a discipline-specific research proposal to gain the skills related to proposal writing and research methods.
Your research project in this unit may either build on that research proposal, another discipline-specific project or placement-based project. You will execute the research project, analyse the data, and present the results both verbally and in writing.
You will be required to complete a student-supervisor agreement to clarify expectations around frequency and timing of contact with your supervisor, and any related publications and intellectual property from the project.
Workshops to assist you with assessment tasks will be provided, including:
- Scientific writing for publication and thesis
- Peer review process
- Pitching your research
- Scientific presentations and research communication
Learning Approaches
You are required to meet regularly with your supervisor/mentor whilst undertaking your research project. The major teaching approaches in your research project are formed by individual mentoring (from your supervisor or academic mentor), peer feedback and workshops. You are encouraged to seek external ideas to generate solutions. A critical questioning approach to learning is a key outcome of this learningstrategy. Working with supervisors/mentors and peers provides the opportunity for you to harness your collaboration skills
Workshops and seminars will also be available throughout the semester/year providing you with further support in advanced research skills and knowledge translation.
For some disciplines, you will be required to work with a peer to form a research team. This may require you to work together, for example to collect data or systematically screen literature, however you will be required to write an independent written piece of work. These expectations will be identified within the Canvas site for HLH403-1/2.
Feedback on Learning and Assessment
Informal feedback is provided progressively and formally by your supervisor and during the workshops. Feedback will be provided on an individual basis by your supervisor. You may also seek feedback from your school coordinator/mentor. Any frequently asked questions will be posted in a shared online forum for student discussion. Peer review and feedback will be strongly encouraged.
Formative and written feedback will be provided on the assessment items as negotiated with your supervisor/s, given enough time is allowed for feedback to be provided.
Assessment
Overview
Formal assessment of your research project consists of three items. You will complete the 3-Minute Thesis during thesemester you are enrolled in HLH403-1. You are required to demonstrate satisfactory performance in this assessment topass HLH403-1 and progress to HLH403-2. Your performance in the 3-Minute Thesis will also contribute to your overallgrade calculated in HLH403-2. The other two assessments (Conference Presentation and Journal Article) will be dueduring your semester of enrolment in HLH403-2. Refer to Canvas for specific assessment due dates for each course to accommodate various WIL placement schedules and demands.
Unit Grading Scheme
7- point scale
Assessment Tasks
Assessment: 3 Minute Thesis
You will present your project using the 3-Minute Thesis guidelines (http://threeminutethesis.org/). Your advanced knowledge and application of research design principles, and your ability to articulate your knowledge informing the research question will be assessed. These will be presented to peers, supervisors and industry mentors.
This assignment is eligible for the 48-hour late submission period and assignment extensions.
The use of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) tools is prohibited during this assessment.
Threshold Assessment:
You are required to pass this assessment to pass the unit to progress to HLH403-2.
Assessment: Conference Presentation
You will be required to present your work in a conference format in front of peers, mentors, supervisors and other staff. You will be assessed on your presentation and ability to answer questions about your research.
The ethical and responsible use of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) tools is authorised in this assessment. See the relevant assessment details in Canvas for specific guidelines.
Assessment: Journal Article
You will be required to produce a journal manuscript that can be submitted for publication (approx. 3000-4000 words based on journal requirements) – title page, abstract, article text (including tables/figures), references. Your article should comply with formatting requirements specified for the intended journal.
This assignment is eligible for the 48-hour late submission period and assignment extensions.
The ethical and responsible use of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) tools is authorised in this assessment. See the relevant assessment details in Canvas for specific guidelines.
Academic Integrity
Academic integrity is a commitment to undertaking academic work and assessment in a manner that is ethical, fair, honest, respectful and accountable.
The Academic Integrity Policy sets out the range of conduct that can be a failure to maintain the standards of academic integrity. This includes, cheating in exams, plagiarism, self-plagiarism, collusion and contract cheating. It also includes providing fraudulent or altered documentation in support of an academic concession application, for example an assignment extension or a deferred exam.
You are encouraged to make use of QUT’s learning support services, resources and tools to assure the academic integrity of your assessment. This includes the use of text matching software that may be available to assist with self-assessing your academic integrity as part of the assessment submission process.
Breaching QUT’s Academic Integrity Policy or engaging in conduct that may defeat or compromise the purpose of assessment can lead to a finding of student misconduct (Code of Conduct – Student) and result in the imposition of penalties under the Management of Student Misconduct Policy, ranging from a grade reduction to exclusion from QUT.
Resources
Students will be required to source their own resource materials. Supportive statistics materials and other information related to methodology and analysis will be posted on the Canvas site.
This list of resource materials will be made available on QUT Readings.
Risk Assessment Statement
There are no out of the ordinary risks associated with this unit. Students are recommended to take regular breaks if engaging in prolonged computer-based work.
