This unit provides an exploration of major counselling approaches relevant to the schooling context. Understanding these counselling approaches is crucial for school counsellors as it enables them to address diverse student needs, apply appropriate interventions to problem situations, and create tailored counselling plans. The unit also delves into ethical considerations, including the use of GenAI, and emphasises the importance of cultural sensitivity in counselling. On successful completion of this unit you will be able to:

  1. Apply counselling approaches to demonstrate professional practice.

  3. Critique counselling plans produced by generative AI and discuss the ethical implications for school counselling practice.
  4. Design and justify school counselling plans for students from diverse communities and cultures.

  • Major theories of counselling deemed to be helpful in the schooling context
  • Application of major theories of counselling to problem situations
  • The relevance of major theories of counselling for your future practice
  • Ethical issues underpinning counselling, including the ethics of using GenAI
  • Creating counselling plans within the school context
  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives in school counselling
  • Promoting wellbeing for all ages through school counselling

The unit adopts a practice-based learning approach to demonstrate and apply counselling approaches within the school setting.

Assessment

Overview

There are two assessments in this unit:

  1. Counselling session and reflection - You will demonstrate one of the major counselling theories discussed in this unit and apply your understanding of the theories to reflect on your experience.
  2. Counselling Plan - This task draws on your learning about designing counselling plans and the use of GenAI in school counselling to produce counselling plans for student cases.

Assessment Tasks

Assessment: Counselling session and reflection

You will produce a video recording of yourself undertaking a counselling session that demonstrates one of the major counselling theories discussed in the unit. You will also write a critical reflection of your counselling session.

This assignment is eligible for the 48-hour late submission period and assignment extensions.

Length: 25-30 minute recording + 2000 words critical reflection

Assessment: Counselling Plan

You will produce counselling plans for provided student cases. You will begin by using a GenAI tool to produce the plans, and then annotate it with your critiques, suggested improvements and justifications. You will submit the annotated GenAI plans, the final updated and improved counselling plans and a discussion of the benefits and risks of using GenAI in your work as a school counsellor.

This assignment is eligible for the 48-hour late submission period and assignment extensions.
