Overview
This unit focuses on how education leaders identify and cultivate innovations that purposefully respond to changing needs and new opportunities. This unit will provide you, as a current or emerging leader, with conceptual and practical tools for understanding, designing and activating innovation in the real world. You will explore relevant leadership models and processes, strategic thinking and planning, decision-making and governance, and the importance of understanding and working with people to realise meaningful change within and in response to the dynamics of educational institutions and contexts.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this unit you will be able to:
- Use relevant theories and literature to theorise and analyse change in educational organisations and contexts.
- Apply strategies, models and process for cultivating innovation to change in educational organisations and contexts.
- Critically reflect on instances and experiences of change for the purpose of identifying influential factors and justifying opportunities for innovation.
- Design a strategy, including a process map, for leading and activating innovation in an educational organisations or context.
Content
In this unit you will explore the following topics from both a practical and critical perspective:
- Innovation theory, change management theory and systems theory.
- Models, strategies and processes for leading innovation and change in educational institutions and contexts.
- Understanding and working with people to activate meaningful change.
- Processes of strategic planning, knowledge sharing, governance and risk management.
Learning Approaches
In this unit you will learn through engaging in the following:
- tutorials (online, on-campus Q&A sessions)
- online learning activities
- small group collaboration
- readings
- authentic assessment tasks in which you will apply scholarly knowledge to real world scenarios and in your own context.
This unit employs interactive and discussion-based learning, case study based activities and critical reflection on experience.

Overview
There are two pieces of written assessment for this unit. Both tasks are interrelated and provide opportunities for you to identify and rationalise opportunities for innovation (task 1), then develop and rationalise an innovation strategy for an educational organisation and/or practice (task 2). These tasks build on the unit’s core learning experiences and assess all unit learning outcomes.

Assessment Tasks
Assessment: Case Study: Factors that influence innovation within an educational organisation or context
You will conduct a case study of a familiar educational organisation (and/or a significant educational practice within a familiar organisation) for the purpose of identifying the factors that influence innovation and justifying an opportunity for change.
This assignment is eligible for the 48-hour late submission period and assignment extensions.
Assessment: Innovation strategy for an educational organisation/practice
You will take on the role of a leader of an education organisation to design and justify an innovation strategy that responds to a need or opportunity for change (identified in Task 1). You will use GenAI in the design process (develop and evaluate) and include evidence in your submission.
This assignment is eligible for the 48-hour late submission period and assignment extensions.
Academic Integrity
Academic integrity is a commitment to undertaking academic work and assessment in a manner that is ethical, fair, honest, respectful and accountable.
