Overview

Technologies impact the lives of people globally and are essential to envisioning and developing innovative solutions to meet both current and future needs. This unit focuses on Digital Technologies and Design and Technologies - two distinct learning areas from the Australian Curriculum. Topics covered in this unit are the theoretical approaches, practical experiences, and the development of communities of practice as relevant to teaching in the technologies learning area. This unit also includes practical application of the ICT general capability.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit you will be able to:

  1. Identify learning goals and plan learning experiences that align with technology-focused curriculum.
  2. Draw on academic and professional literature to explain teaching and learning decisions.
  3. Identify digital technology resources and strategies for their use in safe and supportive classrooms.
  4. Reflect on the value of technologies learning to advocate for its importance.
  5. Professionally communicate learning activity plans and explanations for planning.

Content

This unit covers:

  • The Australian Curriculum (Digital Technologies, and Design and Technologies);
  • The concepts, substance and structure of the Digital Technologies and Design and Technologies content, including:
    • Designing, creating, and evaluating products, processes, and systems in different contexts (Engineering principles and systems; food and fibre production; food specialisations; and materials and technologies specialisations); and
    • Creating, using, and evaluating digital systems and the information provided by digital systems;
  • Pedagogical approaches for developing and applying computational thinking, design thinking, and systems thinking - key thinking skills for the two subjects within the Technologies learning area;
  • Teaching strategies and ways to use digital technologies to expand curriculum learning opportunities;
  • Planning learning experiences in the technologies area;
  • Identifying a range of relevant resources, including digital technologies, that can be used in Technologies learning;
  • The relevant issues and the strategies available to support the safe, ethical and responsible use of digital technologies in learning and teaching;

Feedback on Learning and Assessment

Feedback will be gained in this unit through discussion with tutors and peer feedback in workshops and online. You will also receive written feedback on your initial review and proposal for Assessment 1, which will directly relate to and inform your final assessment.

Assessment

Overview

There are two assessment tasks in this unit:

  1. Learning Activity Plan - This assessment will connect your learning about the technologies learning area with planning for learning.
  2. Portfolio of Learning Activity Plans (group with individual component) - This assessment will draw on your experiences in the workshops to develop and justify a number of learning activity plans.

Academic Integrity

Students are expected to engage in learning and assessment at QUT with honesty, transparency and fairness. Maintaining academic integrity means upholding these principles and demonstrating valuable professional capabilities based on ethical foundations.

Failure to maintain academic integrity can take many forms. It includes cheating in examinations, plagiarism, self-plagiarism, collusion, and submitting an assessment item completed by another person (e.g. contract cheating). It can also include providing your assessment to another entity, such as to a person or website.

You are encouraged to make use of QUT’s learning support services, resources and tools to assure the academic integrity of your assessment. This includes the use of text matching software that may be available to assist with self-assessing your academic integrity as part of the assessment submission process.

Further details of QUT’s approach to academic integrity are outlined in the Academic integrity policy and the Student Code of Conduct. Breaching QUT’s Academic integrity policy is regarded as student misconduct and can lead to the imposition of penalties ranging from a grade reduction to exclusion from QUT.
