Overview

This unit covers essential literacy, critical reading, analytical writing, and written and oral communication skills that are aligned with real-world applications in education. Emphasis is placed on interpreting and creating texts, developing strong written and verbal communication, and building confidence in literacy through engagement with a variety of literary and non-literary texts. The content is based on the current senior secondary curriculum for English/Literature (QCAA). It is designed for students entering Initial Teacher Education (ITE) programs through an alternative pathway or those seeking additional support to meet the English requirements of teaching.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit you will be able to:

  1. Select, interpret, and analyse textual features and narrative devices across a range of genres.
  2. Evaluate how attitudes, values, beliefs and cultural assumptions are shaped by language.
  3. Communicate effectively using appropriate literacy conventions, including academic, professional, and creative writing styles.
  4. Understand and use stylistic devices to achieve meaning and analyse their effects in texts.
  5. Make purposeful language choices suited to the audience, purpose, and context.

Learning Approaches

In this unit you will learn through engaging in the following:

Feedback on Learning and Assessment

You will gain critical formative and summative feedback that will be relevant for your future learning and practice. Feedback will be provided by academics and peers through engagement in unit lecture, tutorials and workshops. Summative feedback will be provided on Assessment 1 and 2.

Assessment

Overview

You will complete two pieces of assessment:

1. Literacy in Context – Portfolio - This assessment develops essential literacy skills for real-world comprehension, creative writing, and oral and written communication.

2. Exam - The end-of semester examination is invigilated. This online exam assesses students' proficiency in reading comprehension, text analysis, and writing skills.

Assessment Tasks

Assessment: Literacy in Context – Portfolio

This assessment develops essential literacy skills for real-world comprehension, creative writing, and oral and written communication. Students will complete a structured portfolio. They will engage with a variety of texts to analyse meaning, apply literacy skills in different genres, and demonstrate their ability to communicate effectively.

This assignment is eligible for the 48-hour late submission period and assignment extensions.

Assessment: Exam

This online exam assesses students' proficiency in reading comprehension, text analysis, and writing skills. It focuses on core literacy competencies and their application in academic and professional contexts.

Academic Integrity
