Overview

You will demonstrate that you have completed the Engagement with Professional Practice required by Engineers Australia by submission of a work placement report. You must have completed your work placement (60 days including 30 days engineering placement) according to the QUT Engineering Work Placement Experience and Certification Guidelines by Week 13. The engineering component of the Certificate of Time Worked will be signed off by an accredited engineer with 5+ years' industry experience.

On successful completion of this unit you will be able to:

  1. Demonstrated learning of engagement with industry through submission of a Work Placement Experience Report that meets the QUT Engineering Work Placement Experience and Certification Guidelines.

Content

Guidance is provided on the requirements to complete the Work Experience Placement Report via the Canvas site, as well as in a module in the Undergraduate Engineering community Canvas site "Mandatory Work Placement".

Learning Approaches

There are no formal lectures for this unit.  All information will be supplied by the Canvas site. 

Feedback on Learning and Assessment

During your work placement, you will receive feedback from your industry supervisor (a professional engineer).  The Work Placement Report will be marked as Satisfactory or Unsatisfactory by an academic familiar with your major.

Assessment

Overview

To successfully complete your engineering course, it is a mandatory requirement to achieve a Satisfactory grade for your Work Placement Experience Report.  The final grade will be marked either Satisfactory or Unsatisfactory and it will not contribute to your final GPA or honours calculation.

You will not be able to work as a professional engineer until the course is completed which requires a Satisfactory grade in this unit.

Assessment Tasks

Assessment: Work Placement Experience Report

You are required to submit a Workplace Experience Report along with a Work Log, Certificate of Time Worked (signed by workplace supervisor) and InPlace Approval email.

Your Workplace Experience Report will conform to a template and be 2 pages long. It will take the form of a Career Episode statement, linking to the national competency standards of Engineers Australia (EA) for Professional Engineer.

This task will be marked as satisfactory or unsatisfactory. Satisfactory completion is requirement for  course completion and graduation.

This assignment is eligible for the 48-hour late submission period and assignment extensions.

The ethical and responsible use of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) tools is authorised in this assessment. See the relevant assessment details in Canvas for specific guidelines.  

Threshold Assessment:

All QUT undergraduate engineering students must complete engineering placements for real-world experience, and submit a Work Placement Experience report under the supervision of an experienced engineer.  The report submission meets Engineers Australia's requirement for engagement with professional practice.
