Overview
This unit is a capstone design experience. It provides you with the opportunity to synthesise your prior learning, within university and the workplace, through the production of a final year project that will be future-facing. In this unit, you will develop the confidence and ability to work with minimal supervision while exploring your individual design aesthetic. You will complete an extended final year project with the opportunity to present your work to peers.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this unit you will be able to:
- Establish an individual design identity contextualised within a researched market niche
- Apply professional standards of presentation, decision making, planning and organisation of work strategy within the development and completion of an extended design project.
- Use advanced design skills and creativity in the development and presentation of an individualised design portfolio.
- Apply advanced theoretical, industry and cultural fashion perspectives, including ethical and sustainable practices, connecting to an extended design project.
Content
This unit focuses on the design and development of an outward looking extended independent project.
This unit builds upon the understandings acquired in previous Fashion Design units and provides content such as:
- final exploration of individual design identity
- finished research and reflection on creative work
- completed realisation of design ideas for fashion
- final portfolio development
- resolved digital fashion communication
Learning Approaches
This unit allows you to combine fashion theory and practice in a studio based learning environment. Studio classes will provide you with practical experiences to explore the connection between design and fabrication. Your work will be strongly supported by staff, and built around studio-driven ideation, experiments, and critique-driven collaboration with classmates. There will be opportunities for class discussion and informal peer critique. Lectures will provide an additional framing of contemporary practice and raise pertinent issues to consider in your own practice and project development. A range of online supporting resources will be used for fashion fabrication and fashion design theory.
Feedback on Learning and Assessment
Feedback in this unit is provided to you in the following ways:
- formative exercises discussed in class facilitated by staff
- comments on summative assessment work in addition to criteria sheets
- criteria sheet grading
- Feedback from industry
- Feedback from teaching team
Assessment
Overview
This unit contains two assessment pieces. The first one falls in the middle of semester, the second in the end of semester. In each assessment task, you will individually respond to a design brief with a presentation of individual work.

Unit Grading Scheme
7- point scale
Assessment Tasks
Assessment: Project Development
Building on understanding acquired in prior Design Studio units, you are required to research, develop and present preliminary work for your independent project.
The ethical and responsible use of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) tools is authorised in this assessment. See the relevant assessment details in Canvas for specific guidelines.
This assignment is eligible for the 48-hour late submission period and assignment extensions.
Assessment: Project Final
You will deliver a final project, based upon the work you have completed in this last year of the degree, including cumulative work from DFB310 and DFB320.
The ethical and responsible use of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) tools is authorised in this assessment. See the relevant assessment details in Canvas for specific guidelines.
This assignment is eligible for the 48-hour late submission period and assignment extensions.
Academic Integrity
Academic integrity is a commitment to undertaking academic work and assessment in a manner that is ethical, fair, honest, respectful and accountable.
The Academic Integrity Policy sets out the range of conduct that can be a failure to maintain the standards of academic integrity. This includes, cheating in exams, plagiarism, self-plagiarism, collusion and contract cheating. It also includes providing fraudulent or altered documentation in support of an academic concession application, for example an assignment extension or a deferred exam.
You are encouraged to make use of QUT’s learning support services, resources and tools to assure the academic integrity of your assessment. This includes the use of text matching software that may be available to assist with self-assessing your academic integrity as part of the assessment submission process.
Breaching QUT’s Academic Integrity Policy or engaging in conduct that may defeat or compromise the purpose of assessment can lead to a finding of student misconduct (Code of Conduct – Student) and result in the imposition of penalties under the Management of Student Misconduct Policy, ranging from a grade reduction to exclusion from QUT.
Resources
Resources required for this unit will depend on individual student design outcomes. Students are responsible for resources outside those provided by QUT.
Risk Assessment Statement
All students and staff are required to complete Tier 1 of CIESJ Student HSE Inductions for access to campus buildings and facilities. This must be completed online.
Tier 1 Visit and review all sections of the health, safety and environment
If requiring access to Z5, 10, 11, 12, 13 (Kelvin Grove) workshops, you must complete Tier 2 - Workshops HSE induction
Where substantial computer-based work is required, you are recommended to take regular rest breaks when engaging in prolonged computer-based work, and ensure that your workstation is set up for optimal comfort to prevent strain or injury.
Further information can be found on the unit Canvas.
