Overview
Specialised knowledge of the diagnostic potential of medical ultrasound imaging is essential for the operator to perform effective examinations. Through the completion of this unit you will develop your applied understanding of advanced obstetric and paediatric ultrasound applications. This unit extends and builds on the content of the units CSN027 Ultrasonic Examination 2 and CSN028 Advanced Ultrasound Topics B. This unit is offered in the second year of the course in order for you to understand the basics of Medical Ultrasound which are outlined in the subjects CSN026 Ultrasonic Examination 1, CSN025 Principles of Medical Ultrasound, CSN027 Ultrasonic Examination 2 and CSN028 Advanced Ultrasound Topics A.
Learning support is provided during the on-campus block via a workshop provided by the student support group. This workshop provides support for students to develop a case based journal article, this is recorded and can be reviewed throughout the semester.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this unit you will be able to:
- Apply advanced knowledge of anatomy, physiology and pathology to the ultrasound examinations of a range of speciality areas with a particular focus on obstetric and paediatric applications.
- Showcase and explain the various advanced scan techniques applicable to the imaging areas covered within this unit.
- Critically analyse and interpret clinical data and measurements attained by sonographers in real-world ultrasound examinations, and communicate findings using advanced digital capabilities to support clinical decision-making and interprofessional communication.
- Reflect on how the principles and techniques of medical ultrasound imaging inform diagnostic quality and best sonographic practice.
Content
The unit covers the following topic areas:
Advanced obstetric applications:
- Interventional ultrasound-guided techniques in obstetrics
- Advanced foetal heart assessment
- 3rd Trimester Doppler
- First-trimester screening and invasive procedures
- Complications of pregnancy, including specific impacts on parents and children in rural, remote and Indigenous communities. (Sustainable Development Goal 3)
Paediatric ultrasound applications:
- Abdomen
- Head
- Hips
- Spine
Research Skills
- Scientific research skills and the ethics of research relevant to sonographic practice, including recognising the role of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to engage in the co-design of research projects directly.
Learning Approaches
The unit combines an intensive block of lectures, tutorials and in-class demonstrations at the start of the semester. Following this intensive, you will engage with online learning materials at your own pace. Various online teaching tools are used to support each learning module and reinforce the major concepts. These are timed with themed Canvas discussions involving real-world case examples designed to develop your deeper understanding of and engagement with the key topic areas. Real-world live scanning workshops during the on-campus block combined with authentic assessment items will build your professional identity as a sonographer.
Feedback on Learning and Assessment
A structured approach to summative assessment and marking will be applied to provide you with detailed feedback on your progress. You will be provided feedback on each summative assessment item as you progress through the unit. Formative assessment feedback is embedded within this unit to support your learning. The case report uses a structured peer review process, providing you with the opportunity to review peer submissions, provide feedback and reflect on your learning. Feedback is also provided via interaction with classmates and teaching staff via the unit discussion board.
Assessment
Overview
The first assessment is a report involving the review and assessment of ultrasound images. You will be asked to provide critical feedback on diagnostic quality, sonographic features and pathology identification, considering the clinical context for each case. The second assessment requires you to complete a report on ultrasound cases you have performed in the workplace. As part of this assessment, you must critically review images and measurements performed. For this assessment you will provide and receive peer feedback before submission of a final assignment summative later in the semester. You will complete the final examination in the central examination timeslot and will assess whole-of-unit learning experiences.

Assessment Tasks
Assessment: Case Report
You will be required to submit a report detailing a case that you have performed in the workplace. As part of this assessment, you must critically review relevant images and measurements and provide an involved discussion on the findings of the case. Specific requirements for this case study will be outlined on the Canvas site for this unit. Your first report is a formative assessment submitted as part of a structured peer review process. The case report is not a critique and should be designed in such a way as to mirror the
guidelines of the peer-reviewed journal Sonography.
This assignment is eligible for the 48-hour late submission period and assignment extensions.
The ethical and responsible use of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) tools is authorised in this assessment. You may use generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) tools to prepare for, generate and refine content for this assessment task. AI-generated content may be inaccurate, unreliable, or biased. Assessment: Examination
You will complete a multiple-choice and short-answer written examination during the centrally time-tabled exam period.

Threshold Assessment:
Threshold conditions apply for this assessment task. Therefore you must achieve 50% or better for this assessment task to receive a passing grade for this unit. If you do not achieve the pass level for this assessment task, you can make one resubmission of this work only when the achieved mark/grade is at least 40%. You are advised to seek feedback on your submission from the unit coordinator before resubmission.
