Overview

This is the second of the transitional capstone units and requires you to integrate and apply your previously developed knowledge and skills in medical imaging in a clinical context. The unit focuses on professional approaches to the scope of clinical practice and includes online learning activities. You will consolidate your professional practice skills in workload management and clinical efficiency particularly in relation to general radiography and minor procedures with an emphasis on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and cultural safety in the Australian healthcare setting. As you progress to a reflective ethical practitioner, this unit provides the opportunity for you to operate with an increasing level of intellectual independence whilst still under supervision.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit you will be able to:

  1. Provide further evidence of your ability to deliver medical imaging services in a safe, professional manner
  2. Critically reflect on your own professional practice
  3. Integrate and apply ethical practice within the workplace
  4. Apply image interpretation skills to comment on axial and appendicular images.

Content

This unit includes online modules in image interpretation in addition to clinical experience in appropriate professional practice roles for any of the following modalities available at your specific placement site:

  • Skeletal Radiography including trauma and paediatrics
    a) Minor Procedures including OT
    b) Fluoroscopic Procedures

  • Computed Tomography.

Learning Approaches

This unit engages you in your learning through enabling you to apply the theoretical knowledge and skills developed throughout the program, both from formal on campus activities and during clinical placements. You should be performing medical imaging examinations on the range of patient types and conditions, and complexities. You will be supervised by clinical staff in an approved clinical department on a full-time basis.
A range of clinical placement preferences provides medical imaging students with imaging opportunities for diverse populations including considerations of culture, age, gender, body habitus, presentation and priority.

Feedback on Learning and Assessment

Feedback in this unit is provided to you in the following ways:

  • feedback on your professional portfolio
  • comments on a case by case basis from your immediate supervisor
  • feedback from midpoint assessment by clinical supervisor
  • end of placement feedback.

Formative feedback will be provided during completion of online image interpretation modules.

Assessment

Overview

You will be assessed by the clinical staff on your clinical practical ability as demonstrated over the period of the placement. Informal feedback will be provided on a case by case basis from the immediate supervisor. In addition the clinical supervisor will complete an assessment form and provide feedback to you at the midpoint of the placement. This feedback will assist you in meeting the appropriate professional standards by the completion of the placement and your final assessment.

A record of rostered hours and clinical achievements verified by the supervisor must be submitted within one week of completion of the clinical period, along with the radiation badge. This is a mandatory requirement.

Assessment tasks will require you to provide evidence of your knowledge, skills and application of Clinical Practice in Medical Imaging, in a variety of formats, which are aligned with the learning outcomes of the unit and course.

For the purposes of professional accreditation and demonstration of capabilities/competencies, students must achieve a satisfactory level of performance in both the theoretical and practical elements of the unit to achieve a passing grade.

Threshold assessment conditions:
In this unit, for you to be eligible to receive a passing grade, threshold assessment conditions apply. If you do not achieve the pass level for an assessment task you are able to make one resubmission of this work for the minimum pass level, only when their achieved mark/grade is within 10% (or 1 grade) of the pass level for the assessment item. You are advised to seek feedback on your submission from the unit coordinator prior to resubmission.

You are required to achieve a satisfactory result in Placement Performance to receive a passing grade in the unit. Resubmission is not usually available for unsatisfactory placement performance.

Academic Integrity

Students are expected to engage in learning and assessment at QUT with honesty, transparency and fairness. Maintaining academic integrity means upholding these principles and demonstrating valuable professional capabilities based on ethical foundations.

Failure to maintain academic integrity can take many forms. It includes cheating in examinations, plagiarism, self-plagiarism, collusion, and submitting an assessment item completed by another person (e.g. contract cheating). It can also include providing your assessment to another entity, such as to a person or website.

You are encouraged to make use of QUT’s learning support services, resources and tools to assure the academic integrity of your assessment. This includes the use of text matching software that may be available to assist with self-assessing your academic integrity as part of the assessment submission process.

Further details of QUT’s approach to academic integrity are outlined in the Academic integrity policy and the Student Code of Conduct. Breaching QUT’s Academic integrity policy is regarded as student misconduct and can lead to the imposition of penalties ranging from a grade reduction to exclusion from QUT.

Risk Assessment Statement

Placement in a radiology department has inherent radiation risks, which are minimised by following safe work practices as taught during pre-clinical units. Students must adhere to the Radiation Safety and Protection Plan of the site they are rostered to, and wear the radiation dose monitoring device provided by QUT for the clinical placement. This radiation badge must be returned to QUT on completion of the placement.
