Overview

This is a capstone unit/experience which provides a culminating learning experience occurring in the final year of a course that brings reflection and focus to the whole course experience whilst, at the same time, leading you to transition into professional pathways and/or post-graduate study.
This is the second of the transitional capstone units across the final year and requires you to integrate and apply your previously developed knowledge and skills in radiation therapy in a clinical context. You will consolidate your professional practice skills in workload management and clinical efficiency particularly in relation to simulation/CT, treatment planning and treatment. As you progress to a reflective ethical practitioner, this unit provides the opportunity for you to operate with an increasing level of intellectual independence whilst still under supervision.

This is a designated unit which is essential to your course progression. Designated units include professional experience units, units requiring the development of particular skills, and units requiring demonstration of certain personal qualities. If you fail to achieve a satisfactory level of performance in a designated unit, you may be excluded from enrolment or will be put on academic probation. If you fail a designated unit twice within your course, you may be excluded. Supplementary assessment is not available on designated units.

Learning Approaches

This unit will enable you to apply theoretical knowledge gained from academic and clinical studies throughout the program during your final year of study. You should be performing simulation/CT, planning and treatment on the full range of patient complexities. You will be supervised by clinical staff on a full-time basis.

Assessment

Overview

Clinical staff will facilitate your learning and assess your ability over the period of placement. Formative feedback will be provided on a regular basis, which will assist you in meeting the appropriate professional capabilities, by the completion of your placement.

Assessment tasks will require you to provide evidence of your knowledge, skills and application of Clinical Practice in Radiation Therapy, in a variety of formats, which are aligned with the learning outcomes of the unit and course. For the purposes of accreditation and demonstration of capabilities/competencies, students must achieve a satisfactory level of performance in both the theoretical and practical elements of the unit to achieve a passing grade.

Threshold assessment conditions
In this unit, for you to be eligible to receive a passing grade, threshold assessment conditions apply. You are required to achieve a satisfactory result in Assessment Item 3 to receive a passing grade in the unit. If you do not achieve a satisfactory result for that item, you are advised to seek feedback from the unit coordinator as there is no resubmission possible for unsatisfactory placement performance.

Assessment Tasks

Assessment: Reflective Journal

In this assignment, you will critically reflect on your personal strengths and limitations at three points - beginning of placement, mid-placement and end of placement. You will develop a comprehensive action plan to identify your learning needs and identify resources and strategies to improve and adapt your professional practice as you transition into a graduate radiation therapist. 

As part of this assignment, you will be required to provide examples of how GenAI tools were used in the completion of the reflective journal, and you will be assessed on your ethical and responsible use of GenAI tools in the marking rubric (CRA). 

This assignment is eligible for the 48-hour late submission period and assignment extensions.

Assessment: Oral Viva

In this assessment task, you will undertake an oral viva examination. You will be required to discuss and analyse the clinical management of provided patient case studies across the scope of practice required of a graduate radiation therapist.

The use of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) tools is prohibited during this assessment.

Assessment: Placement Performance

In this assessment task, you will be required to submit a completed clinical supervisor report and demonstration of attendance via a completed and signed roster schedule.

Threshold Assessment:

You are required to achieve a satisfactory result in Assessment Item 3 to receive a passing grade in the unit. If you do not achieve a satisfactory result for this item, you are advised to seek feedback from the unit coordinator as there is no resubmission possible for unsatisfactory placement performance.

A blue card is required to complete this unit. A blue card confirms that you have passed a screening of your criminal history (the Working with Children Check) and have been approved to work with children and young people. • Clinical uniform (requires purchase of QUT MRS shirt)
• Cost and organisation of all vaccinations is the responsibility of the student
• Cost and organisation of obtaining current CPR Certificate is the responsibility of the student
• Cost and organisation of obtaining National Police Check and blue card is the responsibility of the student
• All Work Integrated Learning placement costs, including travel and accommodation expenses, are the responsibility of the student.

Risk Assessment Statement

Placement in a radiation therapy department has inherent radiation risks, which are minimised by following safe work practices. Students must adhere to the Radiation Safety and Protection Plan of the site they are rostered to, and wear the radiation badge provided by QUT for the clinical placement. Infection control techniques and precautions should be observed to avoid exposure to harmful agents.
