Overview

This unit is the expected advanced knowledge level of your course and builds on the developmental activities in clinical reasoning and problem-solving from CSB057 Image Interpretation and CSB041 Specialised Imaging Techniques. This unit provides you with opportunities to provide evidence of your clinical reasoning and problem-solving skills prior to transition to the capstone units in fourth year. This unit prepares you for the capstone units, CSB070 Transition to Professional Practice 1 and CSH080 Transition to Professional Practice 2. The unit content includes application of advanced knowledge to advanced imaging techniques and roles.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit you will be able to:

  1. Describe the principles and techniques used in selected advanced radiographic examinations and procedures.
  2. Provide evidence of advanced patient positioning skills for appropriate clinical patient management, and perform radiographic examinations in a range of complex presentations using a simulated environment.
  3. Apply the principles of evidence based practice to the advanced practice roles and responsibilities undertaken within Medical Imaging Departments.

Learning Approaches

This unit engages you in your learning through a theory- to- practice approach with 50% of the unit made up of practical application of your advanced knowledge in simulation activities and tutorial problem-based learning. The unit adopts a blended learning approach which includes lectures, tutorials and scheduled simulation laboratory sessions. The unit is presented in an intensive delivery format due to the extended clinical placement requirements for semester 6 of the program. Self-directed learning using the simulation resources will be encouraged by giving you access to resources and exercises that reflect content and provide formative feedback on your understanding and progress.

Feedback on Learning and Assessment

Feedback in this unit will be provided to you in the following ways:

  • a range of formative exercises will be discussed in the tutorial sessions and you will receive feedback during your engagement in these activities.
  • during your activities in the Medical Imaging Laboratory you will participate in formative peer review of your performance and in the evaluation of others.

Assessment

Overview

Assessment items are designed to measure your ability to apply the knowledge and skills indicated in the learning outcomes. Assessment items will be held during semester and at the end of semester. Canvas will be used to provide sample questions in preparation for the final theory examination. For the purpose of professional accreditation and demonstration of capabilities/competencies, students must achieve a satisfactory level of performance in both the practical and theoretical elements of the unit to gain a passing grade.

Threshold assessment conditions:
In this unit, for you to be eligible to receive a passing grade, threshold assessment conditions apply. If you do not achieve the pass level for each assessment task you are able to make one resubmission of this work for the minimum pass level, only when the achieved mark/grade is within 10% (or 1 grade) of the pass level for the assessment item. You are advised to seek feedback on your submission from the unit coordinator prior to resubmission.

Assessment Tasks

Assessment: Portfolio

Submission of a portfolio of a series of activities including peer reviewed role plays, simulation environment activities and critique sheets to evaluate image outcomes. Formative and summative.

This is an assignment for the purposes of an extension.

Assessment: Examination (practical)

As a developing 3rd year QUT medical imaging student, you will demonstrate the ability to perform radiographic examinations in complex presentations using a simulated environment and evidence-based practice to define the appropriate imaging approach.

You will also demonstrate an understanding of the application of concepts of advanced imaging practices through image viewing and image evaluation.

Assessment: Examination (written)

End of semester theory examination to demonstrate understanding and application of concepts of advanced imaging practices. The examination is a combination of MCQs and short answer questions.

Threshold conditions apply. If you do not achieve the pass level for this assessment task you are able to make one resubmission of this work for the minimum pass level only when the achieved mark/grade is within 10% (or 1 grade) of the pass level for the assessment item,

Risk Assessment Statement

The only out of the ordinary risks associated with this unit relate to the use of x-ray equipment in the radiography laboratory. You will receive instructions on safety issues and laboratory rules. You will be required to submit a declaration that you have read and will comply with the Radiation Management Plan prior to using the facilities.
