Overview

Experience in clinical departments is essential in developing clinical competence and meeting professional capabilities. This Unit is designed to build on the experience gained in CSB091 Clinical Radiation Therapy 3 to further develop your clinical and interpersonal skills. After completion of this Unit you should be able to perform the full range of clinical procedures with minimal supervision and organise your clinical learning in relation to your future personal and professional development. This unit is the final clinical radiation therapy unit in the course where both academic and clinical learning will be consolidated. By the completion of this unit all of the clinical achievements will have been met and you will progress to CSB078 Transitioning to Professional Practice I.
This unit aims to further develop your skills and experience which will enable you to demonstrate competence in a full range of radiation therapy techniques and procedures with minimal supervision.

This is a designated unit which is essential to your course progression. Designated units include professional experience units, units requiring the development of particular skills, and units requiring demonstration of certain personal qualities. If you fail to achieve a satisfactory level of performance in a designated unit, you may be excluded from enrolment or will be put on academic probation. If you fail a designated unit twice within your course, you may be excluded. Supplementary assessment is not available on designated units.

Content

Learning Approaches

The main learning resource for the Clinical Radiation Therapy units consists of the clinical department where you will undertake a range of learning opportunities. You will undertake supervised clinical experience over a period of weeks in a clinical department on a full-time basis. You will have the opportunity to participate in a range of clinical procedures to help you work towards competent clinical practice. You will also be expected to interact with patients in order to develop your interpersonal and patient care skills, including cultural awareness. To maximise the benefit of this environment you will be encouraged to develop independent and active learning strategies.

This unit requires you to engage with the Canvas on-line learning environment, where additional information will be provided in the QUT Readings. For this unit, you will be provided with the essential information and opportunity to practice but you will need to supplement this with further reading and self-directed study. You will be required to reflect on your progress and performance in the unit at regular intervals. Knowledge and skills will be further applied during Work Integrated Learning experiences.

Feedback is provided throughout the semester, where work is reviewed and assessed. Feedback will aim to provide students with suggestions for further development of academic skills as well as suggestions for further study where appropriate.

Assessment

Overview

The assessments for this unit are designed to ensure maximum understanding of the content and it is important that you recognise the role of assessment in your learning.

Clinical staff will facilitate your learning and assess your ability over the period of placement. Formative feedback will be provided on a regular basis, which will assist you in meeting the appropriate professional capabilities, by the completion of your placement.

Assessment tasks will require you to provide evidence of your knowledge, skills and application of clinical practice in radiation therapy, in a variety of formats, which are aligned with the learning outcomes of the unit and course. For the purposes of professional accreditation and demonstration of capabilities/competencies, assessment items may address multiple unit learning outcomes in order to ensure that all aspects of learning related to professional capabilities are addressed and assessed. You must achieve a satisfactory level of performance in both the theoretical and practical elements of the unit to achieve a passing result. This is an ungraded unit and the final mark is satisfactory or unsatisfactory.

By the completion of this unit, you need to have met all clinical achievements. Submission must be accompanied by record of rostered hours, record of clinical achievements along with the radiation badge.

Threshold assessment conditions

In this unit, for you to be eligible to receive a passing grade, threshold assessment conditions apply. You are required to achieve a satisfactory result in all items of assessment to receive a S (satisfactory) result in the unit. If you do not achieve a satisfactory result for an assessment task you are able to make one resubmission of this work. You are advised to seek feedback on your submission from the unit coordinator prior to resubmission.
N.B. Resubmission is not available for U (unsatisfactory) result for placement performance.

Assessment Tasks

Assessment: Written case study

You will be required to draw on the knowledge and skills gained during the CSB095 workshops and apply this to the care of a patient in distress, focusing on the provision of patient-centered care. You will be required to reflect on the feedback received from your peers and devise an action plan of goals in order to develop your therapeutic communication skills with patients. 

As part of this assignment, you will be required to provide examples of the development of your therapeutic communication skills using a GenAI tool, and you will be assessed on your ethical and responsbile use of GenAI tools in the marking rubric (CRA). 

This assignment is eligible for the 48-hour late submission period and assignment extensions.

Weight: Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory

The ethical and responsible use of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) tools is authorised in this assessment. See the relevant assessment details in Canvas for specific guidelines.

Assessment: Placement Performance

In this assessment task, you will be required to submit a completed clinical supervisor report, demonstration of attendance via a completed and signed roster schedule and submission of clinical achievements. 

This will demonstrate your skills, knowledge and abilities across the scope of practice of a beginning radiation therapist.

Weight: Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory

The use of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) tools is prohibited during this assessment.

A blue card is required to complete this unit. • Cost and organisation of all vaccinations is the responsibility of the student

Risk Assessment Statement

The out of the ordinary risks associated with this unit relate to the operation of equipment in the clinical situation. Placement in a radiation therapy department has inherent radiation risks, which are minimised by following safe work practices. You must adhere to the Radiation Safety and Protection Plan of the site you are rostered to, and wear the radiation badge provided by QUT for the clinical placement. Infection control techniques and precautions should be observed to avoid exposure to harmful agents.
