Overview

What does the business world of the future look like? The business capstone will make you future ready.

The future business professional navigates effectively through the unforeseen complexities of future business. This unit will develop students' mindset and skillset to evaluate the business environment, strategy, and performance, and before identifying critical business priorities.

The future business professional integrates seamlessly into multidisciplinary teams to develop a holistic view of complex scenarios before addressing these scenarios. This unit will impart students with multidisciplinary team-based techniques to foster design thinking, enhance innovation, and nurture the leaders of tomorrow.

Lastly, the future business professional demonstrates ideas compellingly to influence desirable, feasible, and viable change. This unit will advance students' business communication skills to create a positive impact on real-world stakeholders. 

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit you will be able to:

  1. Critically analyse a corporate, non-profit, or entrepreneurial market by integrating multiple perspectives and a range of environment-sensing approaches to evaluate an enterprise’s strategic alignment, feasibility, viability, and desirability. [KS 1.2, HO 2.1, SE 5.2]
  2. Apply strategies for predicting and responding to future business scenarios by synthesising knowledge from multiple disciplines and a variety of real-world business contexts. [HO 2.2, SE 5.2]
  3. Integrate team processes effectively and collaboratively apply principles of team dynamics to resolve an enterprise challenge and develop innovative business solutions. [HO 2.2, TS 4.2]
  4. Articulate and present ideas, insights, and strategies to professional audiences in a convincing and impactful manner via visual, spoken, and written forms of media. [PC 3.1, PC 3.2]

Content

This unit is designed around three key themes:

  • Discovering the Future: Analyse global and local environmental trends, black swans and unpredictable enterprise scenarios.
  • Facing the Future ­­Together:  Understand effective team dynamics and foster collective design thinking, innovation, and leadership.
  • Creating the Future: Design desirable, feasible, and viable solutions that launch a business into the future.

Learning Approaches

In this unit, you will learn by engaging with a live organisation where activities are designed to enable you to investigate contemporary global and local issues, future challenges, and opportunities for the business enterprise.

There will be an in-depth exploration of team dynamics to equip you with the skills to flourish in a multidisciplinary team at university and in the professional world. With your multidisciplinary team, you will practice designing innovative solutions and strategies for future business scenarios.

You will hear from real-world VIPs who will share contemporary business knowledge for working effectively as future business professionals across individual, team and organisational levels.

You will be expected to attend and contribute regularly to lectures and tutorials, and work through content and self-directed formative learning activities presented on the unit’s Canvas site before and after class to supplement your learning.

Feedback on Learning and Assessment

Students will receive feedback in various forms throughout the semester, which may include:

  • Informal: worked examples, such as verbal feedback in class, personal consultation
  • Formal: in writing, such as checklists (e.g., criteria sheets), written commentary
  • Direct: to individual students, either in written form, or in consultation
  • Indirect: to the whole class

Assessment

Overview

The unit’s assessment is designed to allow students to showcase their readiness to be a future business professional. The future business professional needs to demonstrate competencies in anticipating and addressing challenges at the individual, team, and organisational levels.

The assessments are closely aligned with the unit's modules:

  • Facing the Future Together
  • Creating the Future

Students may be required to attend campus or an assessment centre for the purposes of assessment, regardless of the attendance mode for the unit.

Assessment Tasks

Assessment: Diagnostic Business Report

Students will scope the client organisation's business challenge and critically analyse the organisation's business environment, strategy, and performance. Students will derive insights from their analysis to determine the business' priorities.

Assessment: Professional Team Plan

Part A: Team Styles Interview - Individual component - 3 minutes - 5%

Students will identify their individual team style and reflect on how they apply the strengths and overcome the weaknesses of the team style within a professional team setting. They will convey their reflection in a video interview.

Part B: Team Strategy - Group component - 5 minutes - 15%

Working with their assigned multidisciplinary team, students will adopt a team dynamic framework to design a clear and specific strategy that integrates each member's team style and fosters team effectiveness throughout the business capstone. They will convey their strategy in a video presentation.

Assessment: Client Pitch

In multidisciplinary teams, students will collate their analysis from Assessment 1 and design an innovative strategy to address the client organisation's business challenge. They will critically justify the desirability, feasibility, and viability of their strategic response. Teams will present their findings in a live pitch and provide feedback on the performance of their peers.

This assessment is a live assessment and is not eligible for the 48-hour late submission period and assignment extensions.

Academic Integrity

Risk Assessment Statement

This unit requires you to work with your team for the majority of the semester. Accordingly, students enrolling in this unit are expected to consistently engage with team discussions and equitably contribute to the work produced by the team. If you know that you will be absent from classes and/or be unavailable to engage (digitally) with your team for a prolonged period of the semester (i.e. due to work commitments, travel plans, etc.), please consider taking this unit in a semester that you can more equitably commit your time to working with others for completing assessment.

Beyond the above consideration for the team-based nature of the unit, there are no out-of-the-ordinary risks associated with lectures or tutorials in this unit. You should, however, familiarise yourself with evacuation procedures operating in the buildings in which you attend classes and take the time to 
view the Emergency video.
