Overview

A key aspect of working in the financial planning industry is the ability to draw upon a range of professional skills including managing career and professional identity, communicating effectively with others, and leveraging the strengths of diverse teams to develop practical and ethical responses to contemporary financial planning problems and opportunities. This capstone unit provides a platform for students to develop and refine financial planning professional practical skills by integrating and extending knowledge and skills gained in earlier financial planning units. Students will develop a critical understanding of their professional strengths and limitations in working individually, with peers, and with industry professionals. Students will be guided by academics and industry professionals to apply the discipline knowledge and professional skills gained throughout their university studies to real-world financial planning problems. 

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit you will be able to:

  1. Gather and analyse data to assist with the development of solutions to financial planning problems for clients.
  2. Develop innovative and effective financial planning strategies and solutions for clients in relation to real-world problems.
  3. Communicate information and recommendations effectively to clients by constructing detailed statements of advice.
  4. Apply your understanding of ethical and professional conduct to work effectively in individual and team-based professional contexts.
  5. Critically reflect on your university experiences in the financial planning major to identify and communicate your professional strengths, abilities and values.

Content

This unit will focus on creating statements of advice for financial planning clients based on a real-world client problem. The unit will provide Xplan software skills to assist with the statement of advice processes. The unit will also focus on managing the ethical issues in a client relationship, applying the FASEA code of ethics. Students will obtain skills in developing and gathering client data, determining client goals and needs, and presenting a financial plan for a client using authentic financial planning tools. The unit will discuss how to implement a financial plan for a client, how to assess the impact of that plan, and how to review and monitor the suitability client financial plans over time. The unit will address the responsibilities of clients and advisors, and how due diligence and conflict resolution are performed. An exploration of technology and its impact on the financial planning profession will round out the content.

Learning Approaches

The teaching and learning approaches in this unit incorporate a number of methods to engage students to evaluate themselves, work with others, and learn from industry professionals. The unit will operate in a 3 hour seminar model. The unit is modularised into two distinct phases of learning and teaching. Students will cover theoretical issues in the first hour of each week and then they will focus on a real world client problems and issues in the second part of the seminar and will work with industry professionals and academics to resolve these detailed client problems over a number of weeks. A statement of advice will be developed as a group based on each of the problems.

 

Feedback on Learning and Assessment

Students will receive feedback in various forms throughout the semester which may include:

  • Informal: worked examples, such as verbal feedback in class, personal consultation
  • Formal: in writing, such as checklists (e.g. criteria sheets), written commentary
  • Direct: to individual students, either in written form or in consultation
  • Indirect: to the whole class

Assessment

Overview

The real world focus towards team-based work will require you to think critically about your own practical and academic skills, and personal strengths and limitations for working individually and as a member of a team. This includes interpersonal skills in communicating with others about your own study, work and personal commitments than may limit your engagement with team activities; as well as managing your time and commitments to equitably contribute to team outputs. Students who fail to engage with their team in any way, or continually fail to meet reasonable requests from their team (i.e. timely delivery of content for team presentation; or timely feedback for ideas and decisions shared by the team) may be held accountable through individual marks allocated to teamwork activities.

Note: Students may be required to attend campus or an assessment centre for the purposes of assessment, regardless of the attendance mode for the unit.

Assessment: Client Data Analysis

This assessment will involve students working individually to analyse client data for a real-world client problem using XPlan.

Assessment: Detailed Statement of Advice

In teams, students will develop a statement of advice for a client based on the culmination of work for this client across the semester. Xplan and teamwork skills will be assessed as part of this project.

This assignment is eligible for the 48-hour late submission period and assignment extensions.

Weight: 50
Length: 3,500 words + outputs - 10% above the word limit is acceptable. Grading will be based upon the text that is within the word limit (or 10% above).

Assessment: Presentation and Personal Reflection

Each student will present an area of the statement of advice prepared by the group and prepare a short personal reflection on their professional capabilities, ethical values and aspirations as a financial planner.
