Overview
Information systems play a critical role within organisations as they provide a foundation for efficient data management, automation, and reporting. Analytical techniques also rely on information systems to derive insights for informed decision-making. This unit develops your knowledge and skills related to the concepts of information systems and analytics. For students studying accounting, a solid understanding of these concepts is essential to grasp how information systems and analytics support decision-making in businesses.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this unit you will be able to:
- Describe, explain and discuss business systems and analytics, concepts and issues. [KS 1.1, HO 2.1]
- Use software to analyse business data in order to produce decision-relevant information. [KS 1.2, HO 2.1]
- Apply systems and analytics concepts and issues to critically analyse and make judgements in real world business contexts. [HO 2.2]
- Apply information systems concepts and issues to critically analyse ad make judgements in real world accounting systems contexts. [HO 2.1, HO 2.2]
- Effectively communicate orally and through the use of data-driven visual aids. [PC 3.2]
Content
This unit develops knowledge and skills related to the information systems and analytics used in accounting including contemporary topics such as data visualisation, blockchain and AI.
Learning Approaches
This unit will encourage you to conceptually link the theoretical aspects of the unit with the practical aspects enabling you to apply your knowledge to a wide variety of business situations. The lecture will present the theoretical content and reinforce theoretical concepts using practical cases, questions and media articles. Your practical learning associated with these theoretical concepts will be supported by tutorials which require active participation by students. During the software tutorial sessions, you will have the opportunity to use several computing packages to reinforce your theoretical learning.
Feedback on Learning and Assessment
You will receive feedback in various forms throughout the semester which may include:
- Informal: worked examples, such as verbal feedback in class, personal consultation
- Formal: in writing, such as checklists (e.g. criteria sheets), written commentary
- Direct: to individual students, either in written form or in consultation
- Indirect: to the whole class

The assessment aims to support your achievement of the learning outcomes for this Unit. It has been designed in order to allow you to both:
- receive feedback on your learning as you progress toward the development of knowledge, understanding, skills and attitudes (formative assessment); and
- demonstrate your learning in order to achieve a final grade (summative assessment).

You will apply accounting information system processes and techniques to an organisational situation. You will prepare a report that provides management with relevant information to inform their decision making.
This assignment is eligible for the 48-hour late submission period and assignment extensions.
The ethical and responsible use of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) tools is authorised in this assessment. See the relevant assessment details in Canvas for specific guidelines.

You will apply statistical techniques and software to analyse an organizational problem. You will individually prepare and present a visual report to management.
The ethical and responsible use of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) tools is authorised in this assessment. See the relevant assessment details in Canvas for specific guidelines.
Formative or Summative: Formative and Summative
Business Capabilities (AoL goals): KS (1.2), HO (2.1, 2.2) PC (3.2)
Assessment: Final Examination
The exam will consist of short answer questions and short essay questions. More information regarding this exam will be listed on the Canvas site.
The use of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) tools is prohibited during this assessment.
This invigilated examination requires attendance on campus or at an assessment centre, regardless of your attendance mode for the unit.
