Overview
This unit provides opportunities to formulate, refine and devise advanced technological solutions as they are applied to structures with moderate to advanced complexity. It presents advanced ideas, subjects, and techniques related to selecting, designing, and integrating innovative structural, construction, and service systems into large-scale buildings. It considers the nature and impact of architectural technology choices and how they are refined to be incorporated into complex architectural projects. The unit examines the foundations, structures, cladding, services, and fabric of a complex building. It also develops your understanding of how the Building Code of Australia and Australian Standards affect the building’s architectural technology. This unit builds on knowledge of Architectural Technology learned in your undergraduate degree and will help you develop an understanding of advanced systems that are used in complex buildings.

On successful completion of this unit you will be able to:
- Comprehend a range of advanced structural and construction systems and their application within a complex building design.
- Apply structural and construction systems in a manner that informs design decisions, with particular focus on building form.
- Produce technical documentation (construction drawings) of selected aspects of complex buildings with advanced construction and structural systems.
Content
The major topics covered in this unit will include:
- Advanced architectural technology systems, including foundations, structures, cladding, services and fabric, as they are applicable to complex buildings
- An understanding of the Building Code of Australia and Australian Standards as they apply to advanced technology
- Technical documentation of advanced architectural technologies that enables the effective communication of architectural solutions.
Learning Approaches
The approaches in this unit will be through individual and team-based learning. Your learning in this unit will be fostered through formal lectures, group workshops, desk critiques of your work, research, and analysis. As part of real-world learning and in line with the current practices of the architectural profession, collaborative learning in a group setting will be integral to the learning exercises. On occasion, you will be required to display your work for critiques in a group setting, giving you opportunities to explain your ideas and their implementation in your project work.

- In-class review of weekly activities
- Criteria-referenced assessment rubrics
- Verbal feedback from teaching staff at the completion of projects.

Assessment
Overview
Assessment will take the form of two technology-focused projects. While each project will be assessed for grading at the completion of the project, there will also be ongoing formative feedback throughout the semester, to guide your progress. Assessment expectations will be provided through criteria referenced assessment rubrics, and also discussed during relevant lectures and presentations.

Assessment: Report
A structured technical report of selected architectural structural and construction systems using appropriate analytical techniques.
This assignment is eligible for the 48-hour late submission period and assignment extensions.
Assessment: Professional Plans
Professional technical documentation that demonstrate how individual technological solutions are holistically integrated into a complex building.
