On successful completion of this unit you will be able to:
- Investigate societal systems and values, that demonstrate human, social, environmental and contextual issues influencing and influenced by architectural decisions at local and global scales.
- Demonstrate understanding and application of sustainable environmental systems and ethical principles in architectural design
- Develop architectural designs that respond to physical and social contexts that incorporates relevant technologies for an integrated sustainable design solution.
- Communicate architectural ideas effectively, by representing key concepts through a range of appropriate graphic techniques including freehand drawings, physical models and computer generated two and three-dimensional drawings and models.

Formative feedback will be given at key times during the semester to foster the development of problem-based learning projects. Studios will also include group activities in which peer review will be an essential part of the educational experience. Visiting critics may be invited to contribute to the studio.
Assessment
Overview
Assessment for this unit involves both formal and informal components, group and individual design research, design projects and presentations. Your participation in class discussion forms an essential part of the formative assessment of the unit. The design process will require creative experimentation and the design of multiple alternative propositions and the analysis of them against the project brief, at both conceptual design and schematic design stages.

Assessment Tasks
Assessment: Corridor Strategy and Climate-adaptive Pavilion
Investigate a segment of Brisbane’s active corridor and develop a strategic design response that supports active mobility, public life, environmental comfort and civic engagement. Translate this strategy into a small climate-adaptive public pavilion or intervention that improves comfort, movement experience and public occupation.
The ethical and responsible use of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) tools is authorised in this assessment. See the relevant assessment details in Canvas for specific guidelines.
This assignment is eligible for the 48-hour late submission period and assignment extensions.
Assessment: Civic-Active Building and Integrated Public Realm
Develop and resolve a civic-active architectural proposal that integrates sport, recreation, recovery, community use, public gathering and active corridor interface. The proposal will build on your earlier corridor strategy and pavilion investigation, and should demonstrate coherent site response, program organisation, circulation, structure, materiality, environmental design and public-realm integration in the context of Brisbane 2032 and beyond.

Academic Integrity
