Overview
Project Management is the overall planning, control and coordination of a project, from inception to completion, aimed at meeting a client's requirements to complete the project on time, within budget and to the client's quality, safety and environmental standards. This unit introduces you to project management for built environment projects, which includes an overview of the framework, processes and critical knowledge areas of project management. You will develop a project plan to manage the project through its life cycle and learn to identify and engage stakeholders, monitor project costs, and mitigate project risks and opportunities. You will need to develop these core skills to be an effective project manager. Case studies will be used to embed key learnings in a real-world context. The knowledge and skills acquired in this unit are particularly relevant to architectural design and construction management and related majors.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this unit you will be able to:
- Analyse project management frameworks from initiation to completion, including planning, monitoring, control, and termination.
- Apply project management frameworks to a project brief and create a project plan to ensure project success.
- Identify and effectively engage with stakeholders and communities to develop and achieve mutual project outcomes.
- Work collaboratively in interdisciplinary teams and demonstrate an importance of project teams in achieving project outcomes.

Learning Approaches
Teaching Mode:
Lectures will present key project management theoretical concepts, identify areas of discussion and debate, and develop critical inquiry and problem-solving skills. You are encouraged to share your experiences of project management within this context. Case studies, presentations and discussions are used in tutorials to allow you to develop your ability to apply theory and practice to workplace situations and consider the broader implications of management decisions.
Teaching and learning strategies adopted foster an understanding of the challenges relating to the process of managing built environment projects in a dynamic environment.
Feedback on Learning and Assessment
Students receive formative feedback on the case study, project brief, stakeholder analysis and developing PMP elements through tutorials.
Whole-class feedback will be provided through Canvas.
Assessment
Overview
Assessment in this unit is designed to develop your ability to apply project management frameworks to built environment projects from initiation through to planning, delivery, monitoring and control.
The two assessment tasks are linked through a common case study project. In Assessment 1, you will individually prepare a project brief and initial project plan, demonstrating your ability to define scope, develop a work breakdown structure, analyse stakeholders and plan project resources. In Assessment 2, you will extend this work through a client-focused project management report and presentation, demonstrating how the project will be delivered on time, within budget and in accordance with project objectives including quality, sustainability, stakeholder expectations and risk management.
The assessment sequence supports both individual and collaborative learning. You will demonstrate independent understanding of project management principles and tools, and also show your ability to work with others to communicate a coherent project management approach for a realistic built environment scenario.

Assessment Tasks
Assessment: Project Brief & Plan
With reference to a case study project, you will individually develop a project brief and initial project plan to guide the successful delivery of the project. The task focuses on defining the project scope, developing a work breakdown structure, analysing stakeholders, and preparing a human resource management plan. This assessment establishes the foundation for Assessment 2, where the project management plan is developed further for a client audience.

This assignment is eligible for the 48-hour late submission period and assignment extensions.
Assessment: Project Management Plan: Report and Presentation
Working in a small group of 2 or 3, you will prepare a client-focused project management report and presentation for the case study project. The task will extend the project brief and plan developed in Assessment 1 and will address key features of the Project Management Plan, including delivery strategy, time, cost, quality, sustainability, stakeholder management, risk management, monitoring and control.
This assessment includes both group and individual components. The group component assesses the quality, coherence and professional communication of the project management report and presentation. The individual component assesses your own contribution, analysis and reflection on project management decision-making, collaboration and professional practice.
