Overview

This unit provides you with an ability to develop architectural designs of reasonable complexity with particular focus on urban space, planning and form through an understanding of site specificities, topography, urban infrastructure and the natural landscape. In this unit you will undertake a small commercial and larger cultural design project. This builds on prior knowledge gained in the first year design studios. You will also be introduced to urban design expanding your previous knowledge of site planning. You will gain new skills in architectural design, urban analysis, and architectural drawing, modelling and visualisation toward the formal synthesis of buildings in urban settings.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit you will be able to:

  1. Develop an architectural design proposition grounded in critical and reflective engagement with urban, cultural, and spatial contexts.
  2. Integrate spatial, structural, material, and environmental considerations to support design decision‑making within an architectural proposal
  3. Communicate architectural ideas, processes, and intentions clearly and persuasively through appropriate forms of visual, verbal, and/or material representation.

Content

Topics to be covered include:

  • Methods for investigating urban, cultural, social, and spatial contexts
  • Reading and interpreting site conditions, constraints, and opportunities
  • Understanding architecture as a response to place, use, and context
  • Translating contextual analysis into design positions and propositions
  • Reflective design processes and iterative development
 
 
 
 

 

Learning Approaches

Your learning in this unit will be fostered by project-based learning in the studio setting. This unit will involve lectures, structured activities, seminar workshops and online activities. You will work individually and in teams both in the studio setting and externally.

You will be required to conduct research and prepare design propositions outside studio times. You will be required to display (pin-up or project to screen) your work and explain your design solutions in a group situation. 

Your design outcomes will be evident through your design process involving the use of a range of techniques and media that include hand drawing and physical model-making.

 

Feedback on Learning and Assessment

In this unit, feedback to students is provided in the following ways:

  • in-class formative feedback will be given during the semester at key times to assist students in the development of their design projects

  • criteria referenced assessment sheets

  • Canvas general comments to cohort group

  • collaborative peer feedback.

Overview

Assessment will be based on two projects: a small commercial building and larger building both including an urban proposal and architectural design.

Assessment Tasks

Assessment: Project 1 Commercial Building

A creative exploration of architectural ideas, concept design; building envelope and urban context response for a commercial building.

This assignment is eligible for the 48-hour late submission period and assignment extensions.

Length: 10 x A3 Sheets of orthoganal drawings and supporting diagrams to evidence research and design process
Individual/Group: Individual

Assessment: Project 2 Civic Building

An individual proposal for a medium-sized civic building developed into a resolved architectural design.

The Submission of 2 x A1 Presentation sheets and 10 x A3 Sheets is eligible for the 48-hour late submission period and assignment extensions.

Weight: 60
Length: 2 x A1 Presentation sheets and 10 x A3 Sheets of supporting diagrams and design process evidence. A five minute presentation in class, in week 13, followed by a Q&A

Academic Integrity

Risk Assessment Statement

You are required to have undertaken a J Block Workshop induction as part of this unit. Further information on this will be made available early in the semester.

All students and staff are required to complete the FoE General Health and Safety Induction course for access to campus buildings and facilities. This must be completed online.

There are no extraordinary workplace health and safety issues associated with these components of the unit.
