Overview

This unit provides introductory skills of analogue and digital drawing standards for architecture, interiors, and landscapes. Applying conventions including dimensioning, annotation, cross-referencing and scale, students will learn requirements for accurate architectural documentation. Through exploration of orthographic projections students will gain an understanding of drawing conventions for particular audiences and purposes.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit you will be able to:

  1. Apply drafting conventions to communicate various building materials and structures to a project team at an introductory level
  2. Examine basic building structures and apply them to a design scenario at an introductory level
  3. Produce a considered response to a client's brief that addresses site requirements at an introductory level

Content

Topics covered in this unit include:

  • Fundamental drafting conventions to document projects for construction
  • Introduction to orthographic projections and their role in construction documentation
  • Introduction to computer aided design and documentation software
  • Introduction to basic building structure

Learning Approaches

Active learning will take place predominantly through practical studio and lab exercises supported by lecture content and online material. Formal lecture content will be delivered at strategic times during the semester, which will be applied and tested through hands-on exercises during studio and computer labs. Content will be supported by online resources. Effective development of skills will require weekly participation during in-class exercises. Additional work outside studio time will also be required in line with QUT guidelines.

Feedback on Learning and Assessment

Feedback in this unit is provided to you in the following ways to support the successful completion of assessment items:

  • A range of formative exercises as undertaken in studio
  • General communications to the cohort via QUT Canvas
  • Verbal feedback from peers and academic staff
  • Criteria Referenced Assessment sheet including comments on summative assessment work

You are expected to actively participate in the studio environment and learn from the work of other students that you see there. You'll also need to learn from the examples of work provided to help you apply documentation techniques that will aid you throughout your degree and in practice.

Academic Integrity

Academic integrity is a commitment to undertaking academic work and assessment in a manner that is ethical, fair, honest, respectful and accountable.

The Academic Integrity Policy sets out the range of conduct that can be a failure to maintain the standards of academic integrity. This includes, cheating in exams, plagiarism, self-plagiarism, collusion and contract cheating. It also includes providing fraudulent or altered documentation in support of an academic concession application, for example an assignment extension or a deferred exam.

You are encouraged to make use of QUT’s learning support services, resources and tools to assure the academic integrity of your assessment. This includes the use of text matching software that may be available to assist with self-assessing your academic integrity as part of the assessment submission process.

Breaching QUT’s Academic Integrity Policy or engaging in conduct that may defeat or compromise the purpose of assessment can lead to a finding of student misconduct (Code of Conduct – Student) and result in the imposition of penalties under the Management of Student Misconduct Policy, ranging from a grade reduction to exclusion from QUT.

Resources

Visualisation resources, such as sketching examples, demonstration videos, and exercise guidelines will be made available via the unit Canvas site. There are no set textbooks for this unit.

Materials

A broad range of drafting and rendering materials and equipment is required to assist you in experimenting with visualisation techniques for this unit. The drafting and drawing equipment items that you purchase for this unit are also used in Design Units and throughout the next few years of your architecture, interior design or landscape architecture course. You will be expending this initial cost outlay over several years.

A general list of materials and equipment will be suggested on the unit Canvas site; you can purchase these from the QUT bookshop or
source from a variety of local art or office supply stores, or some newsagents. Ensure you go to the Canvas site prior to the start of semester to obtain the most up to date version and for suggestions on type of purchases and estimated amount required.

Risk Assessment Statement

You are required to have undertaken a J Block Workshop induction as part of this unit. Further information on this will be made available early in the semester.

All students and staff are required to complete the Tier 1 CIF General Health and Safety Induction for access to campus buildings and facilities. This must be completed online.

There are no out of ordinary workplace health and safety issues associated with this unit.
