Overview
Adhering to policies mandated by ESSA, this unit provides you with an opportunity to undertake a minimum of 180 hours at an external clinical exercise physiology site. The focus of this practicum is around the design, delivery and evaluation of safe and effective exercise interventions for people with acute, sub-acute or chronic medical conditions, injuries or disabilities.
This unit is the second of three WIL opportunities you will engage in to fulfill the practicum requirements necessary to be an Accredited Exercise Physiologist.
Practicum units are distinctive from other course offerings in that there is a deal of preparation needed and a number of formal requirements that must be completed in order to allow you to complete your placement. Practicum expectations and obligations are detailed in the Unit Information Document available on the CEP Community Canvas site.
This is a designated unit which is essential to your course progression. Designated units include professional experience units, units requiring the development of particular skills, and units requiring demonstration of certain personal qualities. If you fail to achieve a satisfactory level of performance in a designated unit, you may be excluded from enrolment or will be put on academic probation. If you fail a designated unit twice within your course, you may be excluded. Supplementary assessment is not available on designated units.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this unit you will be able to:
- Apply clinical exercise physiology knowledge and understandings; demonstrating satisfactory technical skills and competence in practical situations as appropriate to the placement context.
- Develop and exhibit a range of ‘soft’ skills, including interpersonal communication, to perform independently or collaboratively and facilitate effective engagement in diverse settings
- Understand, respect and practice in accordance with, the ESSA Code of Professional Conduct and Ethical Practice
- Engage in reflective practice, planning and action for ongoing learning
- Analyse and synthesise principles of exercise and sports nutrition.
- Apply evidence to practical recommendations related to supplements and performance.
Content
XNB490 placement requires you to undertake a minimum 180 hours. ESSA stipulates that you must complete a minimum 360 hours of total practicum time to acquire the status of an Accredited Exercise Physiologist. Having undertaken a minimum 360 placement hours, the following must have been achieved:
- A minimum 200 hours must be completed across the cardiovascular, musculoskeletal and metabolic pathology domains - there does not need to be an even spread
- A minimum of 100 hours in the cancer, kidney-renal, mental health, neurological, respiratory-pulmonary pathology domains - hours can be in one domain or combination of domains
- The remaining 60 hours can be in any pathology domain or in any other activities relevant to the AEP Professional Standards - please note that you can't claim more than 60 hours in any other activities relevant to the AEP Professional Standards if you have not accrued the correct balance of hours in the aforementioned pathology domains.
In summary, you can accrue your practicum hours in two (2) ways:
- minimum 360 hours in total from completing minimum 360 hours in pathology domain activities with the correct balance or
- minimum 360 hours in total from completing minimum 300 hours in pathology domain activities with the correct balance plus minimum 60 hours in any other activities relating to the AEP Professional Standards.
You could not accrue 280 hours in pathology domain activities and 80 hours in any other activities relating to the AEP Professional Standards as you are not meeting the minimum pathology domain requirements.
The QUT CEP Practicum Program seeks to diversify the student experience so there are opportunities for you to attend placements in interstate, regional, rural or remote locations. Students who have been exposed to these opportunities previously speak of their transformative nature both from a professional and personal perspective.
During your placement you will have the opportunity to observe, have face to face client contact and attend to administrative processes. Additionally, you will have scope to develop your 'soft' skills which encompass capabilities such as leadership, communication, teamwork, problem solving, adaptability, etc.
The Exercise Sciences Practicum Lead and Health Work Integrated Learning Support Team (WILS) play an integral role in the preparation and implementation of the practicum program. Consequently, you will be expected to be attuned to the information disseminated by them across a variety of platforms and engage fully when requested.
As part of your progression to becoming an accredited exercise physiologist, you will be required to undertake an online-module that covers sports nutrition with a focus on ergogenic aids and illegal supplements. This module will cover the pro's and con's of common ergogenic and nutritional aids, as well as sports supplement frameworks and regulations.
Learning Approaches
Practicum affords you the opportunity to integrate theoretical knowledge with practical application in professional work environments. Adopting a professional mindset is critical to your development whilst on placement. Such a mindset requires you to not only demonstrate suitable knowledge, understandings and skills, but to also be a critical and discerning learner and accept that feedback is imperative for your growth as a skilled and reflective professional.
The online-module is self-paced and can be completed through Canvas. Online lectures and problem-based learning will provide you the skills to strengthen your critical thinking skills by connecting theory to a practical scenario and critiquing its application.
Feedback on Learning and Assessment
Feedback to Students
Supervisors will be expected to provide you with regular, considered and informative feedback. Formal feedback will be provided via the Midpoint Self-Evaluation and Endpoint Supervisor Evaluation tools. It would be expected that if you are at 'risk of failing' your placement, you would have received explicit feedback during the collaborative completion of your midpoint self-evaluation and been provided with specific strategies to improve .
Relative to assessment tasks associated with practicum, you will receive timely feedback from assessors and be given opportunities to modify responses in the event that you do not attain a grading of 'satisfactory'.
Assessment
Overview
General Assessment Information
The assessment component of the course is through a:
- Practicum Evaluation
- Record of Student Engagement; and
- Practicum Logbook

You will assess yourself against a set of criteria on a scale ranging from unacceptable to distinction. It is expected that you will receive explicit feedback around your performance and be provided with specific strategies to address areas that need improvement.
The midpoint student self-evaluation can be accessed via a link on the Sport and Exercise Science Community Canvas site.
At the endpoint of your practicum, your supervisor will complete an online evaluation of your practicum performance. They will assess you against a set of criteria on a scale ranging from unacceptable to distinction. Please note, students will be deemed ‘at risk of failing’ where:
- Any criterion is marked as a ‘unacceptable’
- More than three (3) criterion are marked as a ‘marginal’
- The student receives an overall rating of 'unsatisfactory'
A link to the endpoint evaluation will be sent to your supervisor by the unit coordinator. It is expected that you and your supervisor will have an opportunity to discuss your results in depth .
