Overview

As a practising exercise or sport scientist and clinical exercise physiologist it is essential to consolidate professional skills and practice in preparation for entry into the workforce. This unit provides an opportunity for you to integrate and practise skills in real world settings. Additionally, it fulfils a major component of the practicum requirements that must be successfully completed to be an Exercise Scientist as outlined by Exercise and Sports Science Australia (ESSA).

The focus of Practicum A is experience working with healthy clients. All work integrated learning opportunities will be through QUT approved placement sites, under the supervision of appropriately qualified supervisors.

This is the first of two work integrated learning opportunities. Dependent on site approval and student intention, it is possible for a student to undertake both their Semester 1 (XNB470) and Semester 2 (XNB472) practicums at the same placement site.

This is a designated unit which is essential to your course progression. Designated units include professional experience units, units requiring the development of particular skills, and units requiring demonstration of certain personal qualities. If you fail to achieve a satisfactory level of performance in a designated unit, you may be excluded from enrolment or will be put on academic probation. If you fail a designated unit twice within your course, you may be excluded. Supplementary assessment is not available on designated units.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit you will be able to:

  1. Apply, demonstrate and consolidate knowledge and skills of a practising exercise scientist.
  2. Demonstrate research and project specific capabilities to investigate/critically evaluate professional practice/discipline specific knowledge evident in your practicum environment.
  3. Reflect on your placement experience and analyse your supervisor's report and feedback to identify areas for improvement and action for ongoing learning and improvement of professional capabilities.

Content

This unit provides you with an opportunity to undertake 140 hours at an external sport and/or exercise science practicum site working with healthy clients. Through observation, face to face client contact and placement administrative processes, you will be exposed to the scope of practice of an Exercise Scientist. You will further develop interpersonal communication, organisational and personal management, and critical thinking skills.

Learning Approaches

This unit engages you in your learning through practical application experiences. Administration of the practicum process is supported by the WILS office personnel. You must demonstrate a professional commitment to engaging in the process of placement in the prescribed time frame as advised by WILS or be identified as at risk of failing. Academic Integrity

Students are expected to engage in learning and assessment at QUT with honesty, transparency and fairness. Maintaining academic integrity means upholding these principles and demonstrating valuable professional capabilities based on ethical foundations.

Failure to maintain academic integrity can take many forms. It includes cheating in examinations, plagiarism, self-plagiarism, collusion, and submitting an assessment item completed by another person (e.g. contract cheating). It can also include providing your assessment to another entity, such as to a person or website.

You are encouraged to make use of QUT’s learning support services, resources and tools to assure the academic integrity of your assessment. This includes the use of text matching software that may be available to assist with self-assessing your academic integrity as part of the assessment submission process.

Further details of QUT’s approach to academic integrity are outlined in the Academic integrity policy and the Student Code of Conduct.
