Overview
Project 1 - Part A and Project 1 Part B are the capstone research units for the Bachelor of Urban Development (Honours) degree that draw together the theory, practice and the urban development fundamental discipline knowledge that have been covered in the coursework studied in the previous six semesters of the program. Students are required to identify a research-related issue or problem and apply their learning to carry out a comprehensive, independent research-based project or study which is designed to extend and broaden their understanding of the chosen issue. The purpose of these units is to prepare students for their transition to the professional world. You will be expected to demonstrate leadership/initiative, ethical and professional behaviour in this unit.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this unit you will be able to:
- Apply design-thinking, problem solving and critical analysis to investigate contemporary problems or challenges and propose innovative solutions.
- Analyse data and apply professional and ethical judgement to inform decisions.
- Conduct ethical research, collect and analyse data, and discuss results and limitations and future directions for research OR critically and creatively apply relevant knowledge to formulate innovative and sustainable landscape planning and design propositions and implementation strategies.
- Analyse the implications of your findings to current and future discipline practice.
- Develop and present findings and recommendations to professional and academic communication standards.
Content
The major topics you will cover in this unit comprise:
- Conduct of ethical research, data collection and analysis, results, discussion, limitations and future directions for your research project OR conduct of ethical design in response to an issue, developing designs from concept to resolution
- Academic Integrity in research
- Update of Literature Review
- Academic Referencing
- Writing to a professional and an academic standard
Learning Approaches
This unit adopts a blended learning approach which includes 2 x 1-hour project introductory workshops for a progress update and last check before data collection. You will also utilise a range of online resources and draw on the learnings from your research methods unit UXH300 (UD01, SE05 and ID18 only) and UXH400-1.
You will be working independently or in groups under the supervision of your project leader. You will also be required to meet with your supervisor/s on an ongoing basis thoughout the semester, to monitor progress and set milestones in this unit.
Feedback on Learning and Assessment
Direct: to individual students, either in written form or in consultation. During the supervision sessions a number of formative exercises may be discussed. Studio sessions may be available for group and individual feedback prior to assessment due dates and on completion of assessments. Feedback will be given at week 8 on your progress with the project report, and then again, once the final report has been marked. Your supervisor will deliver other feedback.
Assessment
Unit Grading Scheme
7- point scale
Assessment Tasks
Assessment: Project (research) OR Design Proposal
You will submit a draft of your research paper/design proposal for review by your Project Supervisor.
Project (research) (UD01, SE05, ID18 students)
- Although only the Introduction, Background, Methodology, and References sections of this submission will be assessed, you should endeavour to make progress on your other sections so that you can get feedback on such from your Project Supervisor.
Design Proposal (DE42 students)
- You will develop a researched proposal for a design project identifying: the issue and locus, theoretical basis, design methods and projected outputs.
This is an assignment for the purposes of an extension.
Assessment: Project (research) or Design Resolution
Final Report (UD01, SE05, ID18 students)
- A final journal style article/industry report assessed for the quality of its research base, including research questions, objectives and explanation of the background to the research; a discussion of the rigour and appropriateness of the collection and analysis of information; the connections between the analysis and the conclusions; the links to the research questions or objectives; and the quality of the written and graphic communication.
Design Resolution (DE42 students)
- You will develop resolved design project outputs and supportive material including a design statement and evidence of reflective practice.
This is an assignment for the purposes of an extension.
Academic Integrity
Students are expected to engage in learning and assessment at QUT with honesty, transparency and fairness. Maintaining academic integrity means upholding these principles and demonstrating valuable professional capabilities based on ethical foundations.
Failure to maintain academic integrity can take many forms. It includes cheating in examinations, plagiarism, self-plagiarism, collusion, and submitting an assessment item completed by another person (e.g. contract cheating). It can also include providing your assessment to another entity, such as to a person or website.
You are encouraged to make use of QUT’s learning support services, resources and tools to assure the academic integrity of your assessment. This includes the use of text matching software that may be available to assist with self-assessing your academic integrity as part of the assessment submission process.
Further details of QUT’s approach to academic integrity are outlined in the Academic integrity policy and the Student Code of Conduct. Breaching QUT’s Academic integrity policy is regarded as student misconduct and can lead to the imposition of penalties ranging from a grade reduction to exclusion from QUT.

Prior to any off campus class activities that you are required to undertake in this unit, a risk assessment will be prepared and made available to you at the MAPS (Management and Assessment of Project Safety) library or on the unit Canvas site. You will receive a briefing regarding any specific hazard and risk related instructions from your field leader before commencing the activity.
If you undertake a project, either individually or in a group, you may in conjunction with your QUT project supervisor, be required to complete and submit a Risk Assessment of your project activities in MAPS (Management and Assessment of Project Safety) for approval. For further information go to Health, safety and environment for research students - QUT Students
Additionally, if you undertake an industry project, either individually or in a group, you must ensure that the QUT project partner agreement is completed, respect confidentiality, be aware of any intellectual property requirements for the project and comply with workplace health and safety requirements, (either at QUT or at worksite).
