Overview
This unit will equip you with a range of advanced, applied strategies for evidence-based prevention and early intervention within educational and developmental contexts. Practical skills need to be founded on a deep conceptual understanding of the links between assessment and intervention. The range of psychological problems which are encountered by educational and developmental psychologists requires a sophisticated range of intervention responses. You need to be able to plan, design, evaluate and implement a variety of prevention and intervention programs that are based on empirically supported principles. In addition, you will gain an extended understanding of client systems such as families, schools, and organisations to apply interventions successfully within those systems. Interventions will also be contextualised within current practice frameworks related to cultural competence, ethical standards, and a critical, self-reflexive approach to practice.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this unit you will be able to:
- Describe the principles and processes of advanced evidence-based developmental and educational prevention and intervention.
- Be competent in employing and communicating, at an advanced level, a range of intervention methods applicable for use in varied contexts.
- Critically evaluate a range of established intervention programmes, extracting core principles and applying them to different populations.
- Implement and design appropriate and sophisticated interventions for psychological problems in a number of domains of human functioning, such as social, emotional, behavoiural and academic.
- Reflexively engage with systemic factors involved in working with groups such as families, schools and human services to enhance successful intervention planning.
Content
This unit focuses on educational and developmental prevention and intervention strategies that are derived from various models such as functional analysis, cognitive behaviour therapy and interpersonal therapies, as well as contemporary developmental science. Within a developmental framework that stresses individual differences and contextual influences, the focus is on interventions that are timely in the sense of being offered early in the pathway or at optimum points such as times of transition. The emphasis will be on developing your ability to understand core principles of intervention and to critically evaluate the evidence base for specific interventions. A range of evidence based interventions will be examined and you will be encouraged to focus on core components that can be adapted for different populations and applied in varied contexts. Effective implementation of interventions will be explored. Systemic factors and possible obstacles to successful intervention are also considered.
Learning Approaches
The unit comprises lectures which may include practical demonstrations, workshop activities, discussions of case study material, role plays and student presentations.
PY19 course design is intentionally blended to purposefully integrate active face-to-face learning experiences with blended/online learning experiences across the course consistent with the course learning outcomes, cohort needs and discipline professional practices. Canvas is used within this unit to inform and enhance your learning. All unit material required for learning and completing assessment is included online through Canvas. Additional readings and resources such as web links and video material is also posted where appropriate to expand your ability to advance your knowledge in the unit's subject matter.
A key aim of the unit and course is to support (provisional) psychologists in developing their knowledge, skills and competencies so they are able to provide the best quality care for their clients. Underlying this aim, and in line with registration guidelines, is a focus on ensuring the public's safety.
Feedback on Learning and Assessment
Feedback is provided through written feedback on the case study assessment and written and oral feedback on the webinar and poster. Peer discussion also provides input to the poster component.
Assessment
Overview
Assessment in this unit is both formative and summative. The formative aspect involves constructive feedback and class discussions that will contribute to the development of your skills across the semester on developing your case study and poster. Summative assessment will consist of a a class presentation, and a case study report.
Note that prior to release of marks, the unit coordinator undertakes a moderation process to ensure that individual markers have applied criteria and standards consistently and fairly. Actively reading the feedback provided will enhance your learning success. Final grades are not confirmed until reviewed by the relevant Faculty Assessment Committee and approved by the Executive Dean at the completion of each teaching period.

Assessment Tasks
Assessment: Webinar
Create a short intervention webinar of 20-30 mins on a topic to be approved by the Unit Coordinator.
The intervention is a psychoeducational webinar for parents, organisations, teachers, or fellow psychologists. It can be in the form of providing therapeutic or psychoeducational learning or professional development.
This is an assignment for the purposes of an extension.
Assessment: Poster/Handout & Webinar Review
In addition to the webinar (assessment item 1), you will also prepare a digital poster/handout/ tip sheet resource for the recipients of your webinar based on current research and resources available in the area.
These handouts will be collated into a resource that will be made available to all members of the class.
You will then review and provide peer feedback for 2 webinars of your classmates.
This is an assignment for the purposes of an extension.
Assessment: Intervention Case Study
Your case study will report on the implementation and evaluation of an intervention for one de-identified individual or group (child, adolescent or adult) with a specific developmental (including emotional or behavioural) problem. The problem and intervention should be carefully described and pre-post measures should be used to evaluate the effectiveness of the intervention. The report should conclude with a reflective analysis that identifies the strengths and weaknesses of your intervention.
This is an assignment for the purposes of an extension.
Academic Integrity
Students are expected to engage in learning and assessment at QUT with honesty, transparency and fairness. Maintaining academic integrity means upholding these principles and demonstrating valuable professional capabilities based on ethical foundations.
Failure to maintain academic integrity can take many forms. It includes cheating in examinations, plagiarism, self-plagiarism, collusion, and submitting an assessment item completed by another person (e.g. contract cheating). It can also include providing your assessment to another entity, such as to a person or website.
You are encouraged to make use of QUT’s learning support services, resources and tools to assure the academic integrity of your assessment. This includes the use of text matching software that may be available to assist with self-assessing your academic integrity as part of the assessment submission process.
Further details of QUT’s approach to academic integrity are outlined in the Academic integrity policy and the Student Code of Conduct. Breaching QUT’s Academic integrity policy is regarded as student misconduct and can lead to the imposition of penalties ranging from a grade reduction to exclusion from QUT.
Resources
A list of recommended readings and resources will be provided by the lecturers at the beginning of the semester.
