Overview
This unit introduces project management as a dynamic profession that plays a pivotal role in effectively planning, organising, and executing tasks to achieve specific goals within a defined timeframe and budget. The ability to manage projects efficiently has become a crucial skill for organisations and individuals alike. This unit focusses on project management essentials, principles, methodologies, and tools that empower project managers to deliver projects successfully. The is a gateway into the fundamental concepts of project management, exploring key areas such as project initiation, planning, execution, monitoring and control, and project closure. Further, important aspects of cultural competence and indigenous perspectives are woven throughout the content and reinforced in the assessment items. By mastering these essentials, you will enhance your ability to drive innovation, enhance collaboration, and achieve consistent project success in diverse industries and sectors.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this unit you will be able to:
- Discuss and reflect on the role of project managers in leading the delivery of projects across different sectors.
- Investigate and pitch innovative project management methodologies, tools and techniques to clients
- Plan ways to effectively manage project teams in the development of project execution plans.
- Select and justify appropriate tools and techniques, including the project management body of knowledge, for the delivery of projects across the project lifecycle.

Learning Approaches
In this unit, you will learn by engaging in the following:
- Lectures
- Tutorials
You will engage in both individual and group activities and assignments designed to develop a theoretical understanding as well as progressively explore the application of those theories to a range of 'real world' situations using topical case studies and scenarios drawn from a range of perspectives and project environments.
Feedback on Learning and Assessment
You will receive feedback in various forms throughout the semester which include:

- Formative quizzes throughout the teaching period to self-assess your learning.
Assessment
Overview
There are three assessments in this unit:
- Project Management Proposal – this will develop your understanding of the role of project management and the project manager with particular regard to engaging with clients on project proposal, scoping and initiation.
- Reflection – you will explore and reflect on the role of the project manager with consideration of the traits, tools and techniques that are common to projects of any project sector and those that are unique or different across sectors.
- Project Execution Strategy – you will develop your understanding and skills of the methodologies, tool and techniques available to project managers in the delivery of projects. This will be done through the development of a project execution plan.
Unit Grading Scheme

Assessment Tasks
Assessment: Project Management Proposal
Working in small groups, you will take on the role of a project manager and produce a proposal for an indigenous client outlining your recommended course of action for the delivery of their project. Your team will identify your unique value proposition that provides you with a competitive advantage over other project managers trying to engage with the same client. The proposal will encompass, as a minimum, a project scope statement, project organisation structure, indigenous and other stakeholder engagement strategies, planned response to the unique indigenous aspects of the project, and the essential plan elements of cost, time and performance management.
This assignment is eligible for the 48-hour late submission period and assignment extensions.
Assessment: Reflection
You will compare and contrast the changing role of project managers across a range of sectors. Reflect on your suitability for roles in these sectors to identify your strengths and areas in which you require further development. Propose professional development activities you could undertake.
This assignment is eligible for the 48-hour late submission period and assignment extensions.
Assessment: Project Execution Strategy
You will take on the role of a project manager developing the project execution strategy to ensure that the project is successfully delivered within scope, on time and within budget. Your project will reflect the Project Management Institute (PMI) Project Management Body of Knowledge project domains.
This assignment is eligible for the 48-hour late submission period and assignment extensions.
Academic Integrity
Academic integrity is a commitment to undertaking academic work and assessment in a manner that is ethical, fair, honest, respectful and accountable.
The Academic Integrity Policy sets out the range of conduct that can be a failure to maintain the standards of academic integrity. This includes, cheating in exams, plagiarism, self-plagiarism, collusion and contract cheating. It also includes providing fraudulent or altered documentation in support of an academic concession application, for example an assignment extension or a deferred exam.
You are encouraged to make use of QUT’s learning support services, resources and tools to assure the academic integrity of your assessment. This includes the use of text matching software that may be available to assist with self-assessing your academic integrity as part of the assessment submission process.
Breaching QUT’s Academic Integrity Policy or engaging in conduct that may defeat or compromise the purpose of assessment can lead to a finding of student misconduct (Code of Conduct – Student) and result in the imposition of penalties under the Management of Student Misconduct Policy, ranging from a grade reduction to exclusion from QUT.
