Understanding emerging trends and innovations in project management is of paramount importance in today's dynamic and competitive project and business environments. These trends offer valuable insights into evolving technologies, methodologies, and market demands that can significantly impact project outcomes. By staying informed and embracing innovation, project managers can enhance their ability to adapt to changing circumstances, optimise processes for efficiency, and effectively address complex challenges. Moreover, a proactive and evidence-based research approach to adopting emerging trends enables organisations to maintain a competitive edge and deliver projects that align with the evolving needs of clients and stakeholders. Ultimately, this understanding empowers project management professionals to lead with foresight, navigate uncertainties, and undertake innovation research to evaluate outcomes that drive both individual and organisational success.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit you will be able to:

Content

In the dynamic landscape of project management, staying abreast of emerging trends and embracing innovation is pivotal for organisations and professionals aiming to achieve success. The importance of understanding these developments extends far beyond mere adaptation; it is a cornerstone for fostering efficiency, competitiveness, and sustainability in project execution. In this unit you will explore emerging trends and innovations relevant to project management including: adapting to changing environments; enhancing efficiency and productivity; managing complexities; harnessing technological advancements; driving competitive advantage; promoting sustainable practices; fostering continuous improvement; and enabling effective change management.

This will include:

  • identifying emerging innovation in the field of project management
  • leading innovation adoption and managing ongoing implementation
  • conducting action-research cycles
  • exploring the value of innovation knowledge sharing
  • evaluating innovations and their implementation

Learning Approaches

In this unit, you will learn by engaging in the following:

Feedback on Learning and Assessment

You will receive feedback in various forms throughout the semester which may include:

  • Informal: verbal feedback from the lecture team and fellow students
  • Formal: written commentary on assignment submissions against established grading rubrics
  • Direct: to individual students, either in written form or in consultation
  • Indirect: to the whole class

Assessment

Overview

There are three assessment items in this unit:

  1. Reflection on the Innovation Hub - you will research emerging trends in project management and exchange these insights with your novation Hub peers in discussions. You will document your reflections on your experience of the Hub and knowledge gained from conversing with your peers about emerging trends.
  2. Innovation Research Report - utilising action-research, you will conduct a deep dive into a nominated emerging trend or innovation identified during the Innovation Hub. You will prepare an evidence-based report on the topic in a format suitable for senior organisation managers.
  3. Innovation Plan - you will develop an evidence-based implementation and evaluation plan to lead the adoption of the nominated innovation and pitch your plan to the lecturing team and student peers.

Assessment Tasks

Assessment: Reflection on the Innovation Hub

You will record a video reflection on your participation in the Innovation Hub. Prior to participation in the Hub, you will research emerging trends in project management. During the Hub, these will be shared with your peers and discussed. Following the Hub, you will record a reflection on your experience participating in the Hub, and on what you learnt about emerging trends from your discussion with your peers.

This assignment is eligible for the 48-hour late submission period and assignment extensions.

Assessment: Innovation Research Report

You will research an innovation that responds to an emerging trend identified during the Hub. Your research will synthesise a range of extant literature, including scholarly and professional literature. You will present your research as a report for senior management to convince them of the value of adopting the innovation.

This assignment is eligible for the 48-hour late submission period and assignment extensions.

Assessment: Innovation Plan

In follow up to Assessment 2, Senior Management has decided to adopt your proposed innovation. You have been asked to develop an evidence-based implementation and evaluation plan to lead the adoption. You will present your plan to Senior Management for approval.
