Overview

This unit will provide you with the fundamental skills and knowledge to manage internal stakeholders, and to appreciate the role and contribution of the Project Manager in facilitating outcomes critical for the success of a project. It will specifically focus on the competencies required to effectively lead, motivate and manage individuals within the project team. The unit provides an understanding of how to undertake negotiation and conflict resolution, and recognise individual and cultural differences and different communication styles appearing in project teams.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit you will be able to:

  1. Critically reflect on personal leadership attributes and emotional intelligence to identify and plan for personal and professional development.
  2. Apply the principles of effective team management skills, leadership, motivation and conflict resolution in a project management setting.
  3. Explain how to manage in a project team environment so that team members achieve personal development and growth, whilst successfully contributing to the project's success.
  4. Create team development plans to encourage greater team diversity and inclusivity.

  • Leadership in Projects (vs. Management);
  • Individual and Cultural differences;
  • Communications Theory and Skills in Teams;
  • Conflict Resolution and Negotiation in Teams;
  • Stress Management and 'Burnout'.

In this unit, you will learn by engaging in the following:

You will engage in both individual and group activities and assignments designed to develop a theoretical understanding as well as progressively explore the application of those theories to a range of 'real world' situations using topical case studies and scenarios drawn from a range of perspectives and project environments.

Assessment

Overview

There are two assessments in this unit:
  1. Reflection - following the completion of two self-assessments emotional intelligence and leadership., you will write a self-reflection report setting down your understanding of these important skills and your understanding of how they can help you contribute to project management in the future.
  2. High-performance Team Development Report - working as a project manager heading a team with performance issues, you will as a group, devise, develop and present to the Project Director, a high-performance team plan designed to alleviate the problems being faced by the team and then individually reflect on your learnings from undertaking this task.

Assessment Tasks

Assessment: Reflective Journal and Self-Assessment

You will write two reflections following your self-assessments on emotional intelligence and leadership.

Part A

Complete a self-assessment on emotional intelligence. Following the self-assessment reflect on the value of emotional intelligence to working in project teams. Your response will need to include relevant scholarly literature and include actions for the future.

Part B

Complete a self-assessment on leadership styles. Following the self-assessment reflect on the value of leadership styles to working in project teams. Your response will need to include relevant scholarly literature and include actions for the future.

This assignment is eligible for the 48-hour late submission period and assignment extensions.

Assessment: High Performance Team Development Report

You will take on the role of a project manager working in a project team that is experiencing some team performance issues. In response to concerns from your project director, together as a team you will develop and present a high-performance team plan including early definition of Roles and Responsibilities, Staffing Management, Communication Management, stakeholder identification and management, Ethics, Safety and Compliance. The project director has asked that the plan specifically be set up to encourage greater team diversity and be more inclusive.

Individually, you will then write a reflection on the teamwork and communication process throughout this assignment.
