Overview

This specialty unit enhances your clinical knowledge and skills in child, adolescent and family nursing practice. This contemporary issues unit will support you in the development of specialist paediatric and adolescent nursing skills. These will include communication, interdisciplinary partnerships, reflective practice and engagement with emerging learning technologies to assess and address actual and potential diverse health needs of children and families.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit you will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate specialist knowledge related to the science of brain development to support positive lifelong health outcomes for children and families.
  2. Critically analyse complex issues impacting child and family nursing practice and propose effective solutions to address a gap identified in your clinical workplace.
  3. Apply specialist knowledge and evidence in paediatric and adolescent nursing that transforms practice.
  4. Engage varied communication modes to effectively articulate specialist nursing knowledge.

Content

Modules focus on specialist nursing care of infants, children and families and aim to develop specialist nursing knowledge in this field by examining the health priorities for children and young people. The content will focus on the family influence along with the neuroscience of brain development and how illness and adversity can impact child development and later health and wellbeing. Development of specialist nursing skills in communication strategies and interdisciplinary partnerships, reflective practice and engaging with emerging learning technologies to develop a report that addresses a practice gap of your choice that you have explored with your peers in your clinical workplace.

In this unit, you will learn through engaging in the following: 

  • Workshops (online) to support knowledge development and academic literacy skills
  • Online self-directed learning
  • Peer review/feedback
  • Individual research and readings; and
  • Collaborative activities.

In undertaking this unit you will be working in a clinical practice setting and drawing on this experience.

  • Formative feedback through student engagement in workshops and activities
  • Comments and grading via rubrics on summative assessment 
  • Feedback from peers.

Assessment

Overview

The assessment for this unit is comprised of 3 summative items.

Contemporary issues relating to child development and the nursing role will be examined and a video developed to identify gaps in the workplace. A report will be developed in collaboration with clinical specialist staff where possible to address the identified gap. The aim of the report will be to recommend an evidence-based child and family care intervention in the acute paediatric or community child health setting.

This unit will use online web based text matching software that assists students to develop the academic skills required to correctly use and cite reference material as well as check citations to determine and avoid possible instances of plagiarism.

Assessment Tasks

Assessment: Quiz

The quiz will assess key concepts related to paediatric and adolescent health particularly focused on the science of brain development to support positive lifelong health outcomes for children and families.

Assessment: SWOT analysis with peer review

You will complete a SWOT analysis of your workplace in relation to what you have learned within the core brain story of child development. You will need to identify an area where an intervention from these learnings could be implemented. You will conduct and receive peer review of the SWOT analysis to support development of your final assessment.

This is an assignment for the purposes of an extension.

Assessment: Report

Building on the second assessment and reflecting on peer feedback, you will complete a professional report. This report will outline a business case that includes a sustainable strategy for the implementation of your identified intervention.
