Overview

The population of cancer patients is growing and there is an increasing need for realising optimal care pathways, delivery of high-quality specialist cancer care to improve patient and health system outcomes. Contemporary health service delivery in this field requires nurses to apply an advanced level of specialty theoretical knowledge and skill to lead, evaluate and communicate evidence-based care within the Interprofessional team to inform patient outcomes. This unit will develop your theoretical and clinical nursing knowledge to apply evidence-based practice in cancer healthcare contexts, with a focus on the effective prevention and management of complex healthcare concerns experienced by individuals and their families affected by cancer.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit you will be able to:

  1. Apply specialist knowledge and skills to make evidence informed assessments to enhance the care of a person living with cancer and their family.
  2. Critically analyse and evaluate complex health related situations in cancer care to identify existing and potential problems and develop evidence-based solutions.
  3. Appraise and apply optimal care pathways and models of care that embeds diverse perspectives to ensure culturally safe practice.
  4. Collaborate and communicate within interprofessional teams to assess, plan, deliver, and evaluate evidence-based outcomes in a range of clinical encounters in the specialty of cancer care.

Content

Modules and activities in this unit focus on specialist nursing care of people living with cancer in a variety of health service delivery contexts.

You will explore:

  • collaborative management of complex healthcare problems
  • interprofessional care
  • leadership principles
  • how to plan, deliver, evaluate and communicate complex healthcare outcomes
  • consideration of cultural safety, diverse populations including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples 
  • contemporary models of care, optimal care pathways, and
  • cancer control priorities and sustainability.

In this unit, you will learn through engaging in the following: 

  • Workshops (online) to support knowledge development and academic literacy skills
  • Online self-directed learning
  • Peer review/feedback
  • Individual research and readings; and
  • Collaborative activities.

In undertaking this unit you will be working in a clinical practice setting and drawing on this experience.

Assessment

Overview

The assessment for this unit is comprised of 3 summative items.
This unit will use online web based text matching software that assists students to develop the academic skills required to correctly use and cite reference material as well as check citations to determine and avoid possible instances of plagiarism.

Assessment Tasks

Assessment: Needs analysis of case study

You will identify a complex patient in your clinical area that is close to the end of their treatment regimen. With support from a mentor in your workplace, you will interview the patient and review their clinical data to perform a needs analysis that will inform their survivorship care plan.

This is an assignment for the purposes of an extension.

Assessment: Presentation of case study

You will present the findings of your needs analysis to a group of peers. You will gain peer feedback to inform their survivorship care plan.

This is an assignment for the purposes of an extension.

Assessment: Survivorship care plan

Using a industry-relevant template of your choice, you will develop a survivorship care plan for your patient. You will apply evidence-based literature to justify your care decisions.

Students undertaking this unit you will be working in a clinical practice setting and drawing on this experience. As such, you could be exposed to risks encountered in your nursing practice. You are required to follow the same health and safety guidelines that apply to all staff in your workplace.

Emergency procedures
All facilities require that their health workers are familiar with local emergency procedures. It is your responsibility to locate fire exits, emergency procedures and complete CPR drill and fire safety as required.

Health status and immunisation requirements
It is strongly recommended that students:

  • endeavour at all times to maintain their personal health at a high level;
  • are fit to work and have had a reasonable rest period between shifts;
  • review their current immunisation status;
  • inform the Unit Coordinator if they are aware of any personal condition which may present a risk to themselves or patients, other students, health care agency staff or the general public while on work intergrated learning placement.

As a student in the clinical area, you must treat all information regarding patients, their families and health care facilities with the utmost confidentiality. Information that is documented as part of your learning experiences must preserve client and health care facility anonymity and confidentiality. Classroom and online discussion should also adhere to these principles.
