Overview

This unit builds on existing knowledge, skills and professional experience and provides the opportunity to develop, extend, and apply these skills to the preparation of a feasible and defensible research proposal for a research dissertation. The opportunity to develop skills in advanced information retrieval and synthesis, academic writing, and critical analysis are supported as you review a body of literature relevant to your dissertation and methodology. NSN508 is a preparatory unit for HLN700 or HLN750.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit you will be able to:

  1. Apply advanced information retrieval skills and synthesise of a body of literature relevant to the thesis topic.
  2. Critically analyse the literature and demonstrate advanced understanding of current knowledge and recent developments in a chosen area of nursing and/or professional practice.
  3. Generate a focused and ethically sound research question based on an identified gap in current knowledge relevant to the research topic.
  4. Design and plan a substantial research-based project underpinned by research principles and justify your choice of appropriate research methodology and methods applicable to a field of work.
  5. Apply high level cognitive, technical, creative and communication skills to plan and discuss research and research knowledge with an awareness of ethics, society and culture.

Content

The unit will cover the following key concepts:

  • choosing a problem to research
  • finding, reviewing and evaluating the literature
  • generating the research question or hypothesis
  • ethical, social and cultural issues in conducting research
  • choosing the research approach, design, methodology and data collection methods; and
  • proposal writing and dissemination.

Learning Approaches

This unit is designed to develop higher order thinking in the areas of research knowledge, skills and application. You will work with a supervisor allocated to you by the unit coordinator will facilitate a review of literature relevant to your dissertation topic; and work with you to formulate a research proposal for your dissertation unit. This unit is structured around self-directed learning however student learning will be supported through on line learning materials, interactive sessions and opportunity for small group discussions designed to foster inquiry and encourage debate on a range of research issues. You are encouraged to become involved in independent study, library research, and accessing the wealth of appropriate and credible internet resources relevant to your individual study needs and dissertation topic.

Feedback on Learning and Assessment

Academic support through early formal, formative feedback to students is a priority and unit specific details about formative feedback will be confirmed through the unit Canvas site. The opportunity for feedback on your learning at key points is available from your meetings with your supervisor. You will be provided with feedback on drafts and the final paper that you submit for assessment. Formative and summative feedback will be provided on return of the marked assessment.

Assessment

Overview

There are two submissions required in this unit. A student/ supervisor statement of understanding, a draft research proposal and one final summative assessment item to be completed in week 13. 
You will select the focus of your research in consultation with the supervisor allocated to you by the unit co-ordinator and undertake an in-depth and critical exploration of this area for assessment purposes.

Assessment Tasks

Assessment: Research proposal draft

Weighting: Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory

You will demonstrate understanding of the significance of a problem or issue to discipline knowledge and practice reality. Develop a testable hypothesis or answerable question, or research purpose; justify appropriate research design to address the research issue.

You are required to develop and submit a draft of your research proposal. The draft will state your research question or hypothesis, research aims/objectives, literature review, and study design. Please include your search strategy and critical analysis of the literature reviewed.

This is an assignment for the purposes of an extension.

Assessment: Research Proposal

Weighting: Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory

You are required to develop and submit a research proposal. This assessment measures your ability to develop an appropriate research question, a succinct and focused review of the current evidence specific research objectives, an overview of an appropriate study design and methodology, and anticipated benefits or outcomes. This proposal should then be used to apply for ethical approval if required.
