Overview

Gastroenterology nursing has undergone many changes, not only within innovative technologies and therapies but also expanding practice roles. Worldwide the prevalence, screening, and treatment of gastrointestinal disease continues to place increased demands on communities and the healthcare system. This unit will prepare you to be an emerging leader in the specialty of gastroenterology nursing.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit you will be able to:

  1. Apply specialist knowledge of workplace health and safety legislation and concepts relevant to gastroenterology nursing.
  2. Critically apply knowledge of anatomy and physiology of the gastrointestinal tract and the immune system to the specialty of gastroenterology nursing.
  3. Assess, plan, implement and evaluate care for patients with a gastrointestinal disorders to deliver optimal patient outcomes.
  4. Apply communication skills using digital technology to articulate specialist nursing practice in the gastroenterology environment.

Content

The content in this unit relates to the broad range of factors impacting gastrointestinal disease processes and the nursing practice related to the safe care of patients experiencing these diseases.

Assessment

Overview

The three summative assessment items in this unit are designed to allow students the opportunity to demonstrate achievement of the unit learning outcomes.

This unit will use online web based text matching software that assists students to develop the academic skills required to correctly use and cite reference material as well as check citations to determine and avoid possible instances of plagiarism.

Assessment Tasks

Assessment: Critical Review

As a registered nurse, you will conduct and complete a critical review of a key contemporary issue of your choice impacting the health and safety within the field of Gastrointestinal Nursing. In doing so, you will identify the risk management process, evaluate the issue and relevance of control measures within your local nursing workplace or practice, and submit your written findings as a service improvement initiative, for your manager and Educational team.

Assessment: Inservice Presentation and Reflection

Using your specialist knowledge of gastroenterology, you will create and present an education session/in-service (pending audience this means your Manager/Supervisor/Peers in workplace or enrolled in the unit + Unit coordinator) for a nursing audience summarising your findings from the critical review. After doing so, you will receive feedback, reflect on this and  then you will submit your presentation and feedback reviews.

This is an assignment for the purposes of an extension.

Assessment: Online Quiz

This assessment will consist of multiple choice and short answer questions that will test your specialist theoretical knowledge of biological principles, anatomy and physiology of the gastrointestinal tract and application to complex patient presentations.
