Overview
An introductory level unit, this unit will provide you with an understanding of the interplay between organisational effectiveness, long-term sustainability, and the management and organisation of people in the workplace. The unit fosters discipline knowledge, analytical and action orientated competencies and prepares students for advanced study in the field. This unit is the foundation unit in HRM in the MBus (HRM) and related courses. It overviews the profession of HRM and the practice of the HR Professional in the organisation.

Content
This unit addresses key areas of HR activity to provide students with an understanding of how HRM contributes to business success whilst also delivering opportunities for workers to experience good work and working lives. The unit provides students with an introduction to the legal, occupational health and safety and employment relations context of HRM in Australia, strategic and ethical HRM, and areas of HR practice areas related to designing work, recruitment and selection, performance management and learning and development.

Learning Approaches
The materials in this unit are designed to encourage and enable active student participation. Activities to support learning include the use of pre recorded lectures, group discussions, case studies, real-world examples, and importantly, individual and group work activities. This unit is built upon adult learning principles which means students are required to actively participate in a range of learning experiences which include indivividual preparation through guided activities available on Canvas, working online via Zoom in small groups and large group discussions to apply particular HR techniques relevant to the topic explored each week. Extension materials are provided to enable students to follow up on each weekly topic through self-directed materials which are provided on Canvas and via QUT Readings.

Overview
The assessments in this unit provide students with opportunities to engage with theory and practice of HRM. The first assessment supports students to understand an approach to HRM which seeks to balance the contribution of HRM to business success whilst also delivering opportunities for workers to experience good work and working lives. The second assessment enables students to apply this understanding of a balanced approach to an HRM topic covered by the unit.
Students may be required to attend campus or an assessment centre for the purposes of assessment, regardless of the attendance mode for the unit.

An annotated bibliography which addresses the literature on strategic and socially sustainable (provision of decent work) approaches to human resource management. This assessment is designed to develop your knowledge of key concepts and current research, alongside critical analysis and writing skills.

This assignment is eligible for the 48-hour late submission period and assignment extensions.
Assessment: HR Managers' Briefing Paper
The briefing paper requires students to produce a guide for HR managers which outlines a strategic and socially sustainable approach to an HR topic relevant to the unit. The task includes a reflection on practice.

Overview
The assessments in this unit provide students with opportunities to engage with theory and practice of HRM. The first assessment supports students to understand an approach to HRM which seeks to balance the contribution of HRM to business success whilst also delivering opportunities for workers to experience good work and working lives. The second assessment enables students to apply this understanding of a balanced approach to an HRM topic covered by the unit.
Students may be required to attend campus or an assessment centre for the purposes of assessment, regardless of the attendance mode for the unit.

An annotated bibliography which addresses the literature on strategic and socially sustainable (provision of decent work) approaches to human resource management. Overview
An introductory level unit, this unit will provide you with an understanding of the interplay between organisational effectiveness, long-term sustainability, and the management and organisation of people in the workplace. The unit fosters discipline knowledge, analytical and action orientated competencies and prepares students for advanced study in the field. This unit is the foundation unit in HRM in the MBus (HRM) and related courses. It overviews the profession of HRM and the practice of the HR Professional in the organisation.

Content
This unit addresses key areas of HR activity to provide students with an understanding of how HRM contributes to business success whilst also delivering opportunities for workers to experience good work and working lives. The unit provides students with an introduction to the legal, occupational health and safety and employment relations context of HRM in Australia, strategic and ethical HRM, and areas of HR practice areas related to designing work, recruitment and selection, performance management and learning and development.

Learning Approaches
The materials in this unit are designed to encourage and enable active student participation. Activities to support learning include the use of pre recorded lectures, group discussions, case studies, real-world examples, and importantly, individual and group work activities. This unit is built upon adult learning principles which means students are required to actively participate in a range of learning experiences which include indivividual preparation through guided activities available on Canvas, working online via Zoom in small groups and large group discussions to apply particular HR techniques relevant to the topic explored each week.
