Overview

This developmental unit explores the dynamic interplay between workplace relations frameworks, employment law and the rapidly changing nature of work. You will critically evaluate how digital technologies (such as AI), remote work, automation and the gig economy are reshaping employer–employee relationships and challenging traditional notions of fairness, compliance and organisational culture. You will develop the knowledge and skills required to anticipate and respond to future‑of‑work challenges. The unit emphasises ethical decision‑making, inclusive practices to create workplaces that are both productive, humane and sustainable.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit you will be able to:

  1. Analyse workplace relations issues using discipline knowledge, technical/digital tools and ethical principles to generate evidence-based insights. [KS 1.1, KS 1.2, SE 5.1]
  2. Produce clear, coherent and professionally structured written analyses that communicate workplace relations interpretations effectively to organisational audiences. [PC 3.1]
  3. Evaluate workplace dispute scenarios using strategic and analytical reasoning to propose defensible recommendations that reflect socially responsible and sustainable outcomes. [HO 2.1, HO 2.2, SE 5.2]

Content

In this unit, you will explore advanced workplace relations and employment law, examining how institutions, bargaining structures, and dispute resolution processes shape the employment relationship. You will also analyse how digital technologies, automation, digital platforms, and emerging work models affect fairness, inclusion, flexibility, and the future of work in globalised and technologically evolving labour markets.

Learning Approaches

You will engage in case analyses, and reflective exercises to explore complex workplace relations and future‑of‑work scenarios. Collaborative workshops and debate sessions will deepen your understanding of diverse stakeholder perspectives and help you develop negotiation and dispute‑resolution strategies. Digital tools and AI‑enabled platforms will be used to research emerging trends and to support the preparation of briefing papers and presentations. The learning design emphasises ethical reasoning, strategic foresight and inclusivity to prepare you for leadership in future‑oriented work environments.

Feedback on Learning and Assessment

Students will receive feedback in various forms throughout the semester which may include:

  • Informal: worked examples, such as verbal feedback in class, personal consultation
  • Formal: in writing, such as checklists (e.g. criteria sheets), written commentary
  • Direct: to individual students, either in written form or in consultation

Assessment: Workplace Relations Briefing Paper

You will prepare an individual workplace relations briefing paper that critically examines a current industrial relations issue influenced by digital technologies or other future‑of‑work factors. The paper will synthesise legal frameworks, organisational context and ethical considerations to provide strategic advice to decision‑makers, developing your analytical and professional writing skills.

The ethical and responsible use of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) tools is authorised in this assessment. See the relevant assessment details in Canvas for specific guidelines.

This assignment is eligible for the 48-hour late submission period and assignment extensions.
