Overview

A successful human resource professional requires more than content knowledge and technical skills. They also need to influence decision making through clearly articulating and demonstrating the strategic and operational value of HR practices. This capstone unit provides final year human resource students with real world opportunities to integrate and apply the content knowledge of various human resource functions and evidence based practice to demonstrate the value human resource management creates for diverse organisation.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit you will be able to:

Learning Approaches

The teaching and learning approaches in this unit incorporate several methods to engage students to reflect on their future, work with others, and learn from industry professionals and deliver value to industry partners.

The unit is modularised into three distinct phases of learning and teaching. Industry input, research and critical analysis, are the focus in the first module, which requires the students to engage with online learning resources, the Professional Presentation Masterclass and industry seminars.

The second module is entirely online and augments the human resource management knowledge students have developed throughout their degree with human resource management Value Creation case studies. With online resources and a workshop-based Reflective Practitioner Masterclass, this phase focuses on the reflective work of thinking about the future of human resource management. With the support of online activities and tools, students critically reflect on their future role in human resource management Value Creation.

The final module of the unit engages in output to industry, pivoting student focus from their studies to life-long reflective practice in the Real World.

 

Feedback on Learning and Assessment

Students will receive feedback in various forms throughout the semester, which may include:

  • Informal: worked examples, such as verbal feedback in class, personal consultation
  • Formal: in writing, such as checklists (e.g. criteria sheets), written commentary
  • Direct: to individual students, either in written form or in consultation
  • Indirect: to whole class

Assessment

Overview

You will complete three assessment items which are designed to assist you in developing your ability to influence decision making through clearly articulating and demonstrating the strategic and operational value of HR practices. The first assessment sees you work in a group to develop an integrated HRM solution that creates value for a sponsoring organisation. Assessment 2 sees you present your solution to the organisation and assessment 3 see you reflect on your learning and subsequently develop an individual, personal career-focused portfolio.

You will receive feedback on your learning as you progress toward the development of knowledge, understanding, skills and attitudes; and demonstrate your learning in order to achieve a final grade.

Students may be required to attend campus or an assessment centre for the purposes of assessment, regardless of the attendance mode for the unit.

Assessment Tasks

Assessment: Value Creation Analysis

Students will be allocated into teams early in the semester. Each team is required to select one Industry Partner and analyse the organisation to determine the role human resource management plays in Value Creation. In undertaking this research, the team will ensure that they develop effective teamwork practices for the upcoming Industry Partner Presentation. The total marks incorporate self and peer assessment of group processes.

Assessment: Industry Partner Presentation

Based on the Value Creation Analysis, as a team you will develop a strategy and recommendations for optimising human resource management Value Creation in your chosen Industry Partner organisation. Your team will develop an implementation plan that leverages your collective human resource management knowledge. The total marks incorporate self and peer assessment of group processes.

Length: 20 minutes plus 10 minutes for questions

Assessment: Transition Reflection

Students will reflect on human resource management Value Creation in the real world, and the role they see for themselves as an human resource management professional in the future in regards to value creation.

Formative or Summative: Summative

This assignment is eligible for the 48-hour late submission period and assignment extensions.
